Hello all,

I am just starting to explore the possibility of being banded, but my insurance (through my employer) specificall excludes WLS and any complications that may result from WLS, so I am not only going to have to self pay, I will be totally exposed physically and financially. It will take me a year or so to save enough money for the surgery and a cushion, but my car has 150K on the odometer, my 60 year old house always needs something and I support a mother with dementia and a sister with Asperger's. I will figure something out; coping is what I do best, except where food is concerned. I have been fighting a losing battle with my weight since I hit puberty. I am pretty sure I have PCOS but was never diagnosed since I wasn't planning on having children.

I have multiple co-morbidities, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and probably sleep apnea since I don't remember ever having a good night's sleep.

I had lap band surgery last October, and have lost 70 pounds. Our insurance covered our surgery because I too had diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea. If you need three problems, and have not been tested for sleep apnea, see if your insurance pays for the sleep study and if so have it done. Then go back to the insurance company and see if they will pay for weight loss surgery.

Hello there ! Well , it sounds like you have alot on your plate ! If I were you I would first make a appt with whatever surgeon you are planning on using. Because in most cases their office manger can help you with your insurance company. The surgeon wants to make money . so they most likely will find a way. You will have to jump thro alot of hoops and red tape .. but if you have that many co-morbidilities theres someway it can be done. If not thro you insurance at work , the state may pay for it since you are so high risk. I urge you to make a appt with the suregon and get the ball rolling.
I myself am jumping thro alot of hoops to get Gastric bypass. I have more than 150lbs to lose so that was the besst option for me. But yea, i know it will all be worth it in the end.

I didn't mean to sound quite so martyred. LOL. My life is no more difficult than millions of others, sometimes I am not as gracious with it as I should be. But all the little ways I comforted myself as a child are killing me now and knowing that hasn't helped me stop. When I get home all i want to do is hit the recliner with a couple of pieces of fried chicken followed by ice cream and get Mom to bed at 10. I am usually in bed by 10:30 since I need to be up and on the road to work by 6. I once told a friend that a "day without ice cream was like a day without air." I found out today we are changing insurance, maybe the new contract is different.

If I don't get healthy, not only will my Mom and sister be left on their own; my other sisters have never been much help. I will be dead early. Not a prospect I contemplate happily.

Here's hoping that your new insurance covers WLS or at least complications. All I can say is that if it is covered get it done. I've been with my current company and if I had gotten this done 3 years ago, WLS would have been covered at 100%. If I had gotten it done last year - WLS covered at 50% but now WLS is still at 50% but now I have a $1000 copay for any outpatient procedure and anesthesia has an additional 25% copay. I need to get this done this year before more copays are added !! Good luck to you !

Here's hoping that your new insurance covers WLS or at least complications. All I can say is that if it is covered get it done. I've been with my current company and if I had gotten this done 3 years ago, WLS would have been covered at 100%.
