George Alexander Fielding Associate Professor of Surgery at NYU School of Medicine is a pioneer in laparoscopic and bariatric surgery Dr Fielding studied medicine at the University of Queensland graduating in 1979 and completed his medical training at the Royal Brisbane Hospital During his postgraduate training he developed interests in laparoscopic and hepatobiliarypancreatic surgery and then pursued advanced training in the field in Britain and Switzerland In 1989 he returned Royal Brisbane Hospital as a staff surgeon and continues to serve the Hospital as a visiting surgeon Later he opened a private practice at the Wesley Hospital also in Brisbane earning a reputation for his expertise in laparoscopic bariatric and hepatobiliary surgery To date he has performed more than 4000 bariatric surgeries and has extensive experience operating on super obese patients and obese children

Dr Fielding has been instrumental in the development of laparoscopic surgery and has taught the techniques to surgeons around the world and has published more than 150 journal articles abstracts and book chapters

He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons England In addition he is and a member of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons the Society of Surgery for the Alimentary Tract the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons and the International HepatoPancreatoBiliary Association
