Where to buy sashimi fish?

Where would one go to buy fish that is safe to make sashimi out of? I'm going to throw a little dinner party with an asian menu, so I wanted to know if anyone had any knowledge. haha.

I've heard you could get it at costco, but I was just curious if anyone knew anything more.

Thanks!!!

I've never seen fish of the quality for sashimi at Costco, although it may vary by region. Here in San Diego is Catalina Offshore Products ( How To Make Fresh Seafood Sushi Home kit, Raw Fish Sashimi ) which ships overnight. They have very high reviews from the locals here and their prices are pretty good.

We eat sashimi fairly often here as one of my business partners is from Hawaii and is accustomed to having it on a regular basis. We get it from a local Japanese grocery.

Alternatively, you may try Whole Foods (also known as Whole Paycheck).

Bacterial infections from raw fish are not fun. I had one from sushi once, while living in San Francisco, and can't recommend it as good weekend entertainment.

Chech seafood counters for yellowfin tuna, it's one of the more common "at home" sashimi/sushi fishes.

I'd only use raw fish that's sold as sashimi-grade, and I've only seen that in Hawaii and in Japanese grocery stores in the city, not anywhere local to me.

I make sushi at home using cooked crab (my parents can catch crab in the water in front of their house!), smoked salmon from Costco, and barbecued eel (unagi) from the freezer section of a whole foods type grocery in a nearby town. I also make tamago (Tutorial: Making tamagoyaki or Japanese rolled egg | Lunch in a Box: Building a Better Bento) for nigiri.

Hope that helps! Have a fun party :-)

Oh, and here's another idea - my kids really like these:
Inarizushi: sushi in a bean bag | Just Hungry

I get the fried bean curd at an Oriental grocer.

I definatly would try Whole Foods or a wholesale fish market. Not sure where you live but if Its anywhere near the coast you should be able to find a reputable fish monger.
