I'm no doctor but from what I've heard it seems that there is a risk of dehydration when you are banded and you have to be deliberate about avoiding that. For one thing, your stomach is much smaller, so you can't just down a couple tall glasses of water to "catch up" with your water consumption. If you don't drink little bits constantly, you can get dehydrated. And since you are not supposed to drink with your meals, you need to drink other times. So just generally, you have to pay attention to drinking fluids in a way that you never had to before.

Dehydration is bad for a number of reasons, but one of them is kidney stones. Some people find that they get kidney stones after being banded. Apparently this is not caused by the band itself, but rather is caused because people have a tendency to get dehydrated when they are banded. I have never had kidney stones, but from the description provided by some members of the group, I am perfectly happy to avoid them. There may be certain experiences a person just "has to have" to feel that they have really lived. Kidney stones is not one of them.

There are several good reasons:

1) water is to the body as oil is to a car engine;

2) decreased food bolus requires increased fluid/slurry to keep peristaltic movement active;

3) markedly altered digestive process, from glyconeogenesis to glycolosis, the resulting ketotic acidosis state of fat and protein metabolism requires great water availability to supply increased water as a hydrogen ion supplier;

4) helps moderate the increased kidney workload in the protein and fatty acid breakdown product during the blood purification process.....increased water decreases likelihood of such as kidney stones; nitrogenous breakdown of protein purines requires water;

5) similar biochemical changes helps all tissues rehydrate under the altered digestive process....gall bladder bile may be thickened too much with resultant gall stone formation;

6) helps flush digestive tract contents ever downward; 'water as a lubricant'....

7) drinking water actually does help relieve temporarily hunger sensation;

Hope this little list helps....

And 'water' is NOT 'coffee' 'soda' etc.....
