I heard that artificial sweeteners boost your blood sugar and they are not good to have my sister who is thin told me that years ago when she lost a bunch of weight she said it is better to use sugar it metabolizes quicker in your body.

re: Stevia: I have used it for years because as a diabetic it didn't produce blood glucose spikes like other sweeteners did....there's lots of articles on it, take yer pick...
re: foreign stuff in the holiest of holies, Coffee....
...to give you an idea of my own Humble Opinion, I'm sure I read somewhere: 'in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was 'Let there be Coffee'....
I am of the generation that believes the only alteration that improves coffee is to add the proper amount of whiskey...but since I quit drinking alcohol when I started shooting insulin, I have had to make do with the Holy Black straight....with such a positively HUGE variety of coffees available, and I regularly try different entrants, I should make it into the next century before running out of choices....
my current favorites are : "Truck Stop" a propriety blend by Allan Brothers out of Corvallis Oregon....a powerful and challening flavor, not overwhelming that has me churning down the road in the fast lane...very different from their more civilized version "Bus Stop"...
"Three Pearls of Orient" another blend from a small shop in Portland...comprised of Sulawesi, Timor and a bean from India I can't name right now...but since the Tsunami supplies are short...
"Sulawesi" from Starbucks...
"Dark Mountain" from a shop in Ashland...haven't been able to get any of that lately either....
"African Genesis"---a complex blend from a Eugene shop that was absolutely perfect for years...then they changed the formula...then they went out of business...
If you can see thru it, it ain't coffee...if the spoon falls over when placed in the middle, it's too weak....hell, if the spoon survives intact it's barely strong enuff...
I don't care for any of the confectionary versions of the Holy Black....and if ya have to drink more than a couple cups in the morning light, it ain't fit for my own little communion service...
a quote I once heard "coffee should be hotter than hell, blacker than night, and sweeter than the teardrops in a mother's eyes as toward the chair her wayward son is slowly led"....except for the sweet part I agree....

I am so partial to most of the African coffees! And oooh aged sumatran.....
My ex-H decided that I would no longer be drinking expensive coffee, I would only be drinking canned coffee like everybody else. He was gone within the week. :D
Of course, one of the first things I did when I started my exhile was go to the 2 local coffee houses and ask about the availablity of African coffees. I thought the one guy was going to propose marriage then and there. Or at least, pledge his undieing love...:)

It could be an allergy, but, I know many who have the same problem. Some didn't realize it was the splenda until I told them about my problem. They thought they were lactose intolerant all of a sudden on the Sugar free Bunny tracks. When I asked if it had splenda they said yes. I figure that is their problem, but, I am not a doctor. It causes me to have major stomach cramps and well enough said lol

City: Frisco State: Tx | In support of Denise, I also have issues with Splenda. Don't get me wrong.... it is a wonderful thing...tooo good. I really love the Russell stover low carb products and all the newest bars with Splenda. The first time I tried them I too spent some time in bathroom. But if I have a bar every night or every other night I constipate badly for a week or more. I been going through this for a couple of years... because I keep going back to these newest good tasting Splenda products, but they don't like me as much as I like them. I guess a few of us Do have some type of allergy to Splenda. It does have a splendid taste though! I am glad to know most of you have no physical reaction to it.

I've been using a lot of splenda & at the back of my mind is always that this can't be great for me. I'm going to the health food store to get Stevia tomorrow. Does anyone recommend the liquid over the powder or vice versa?

I've used the dark liquid stevia...which I prefer...and the clear liquid stevia...tastes the same...and even tried the full leaf stevia...which is less handy to use...
It only takes a few drops so go easy on it....I use about 3-4 literal drops from an eye dropper (built in to the clear kind)...
MSB gets "Stevia Liquid Extract" from Puritans Pride....they usually have a special of "3 for 1" but she doesn't remember the price on it...they have a web site...one 2 oz bottle lasts me several months....

Road Queen....hope you find the Holy Grail of Perfection... Coffee without a Cup....and bring some home for those of us who have Abandoned our Search for Truth and are simply seeking the Ultimate cup of Coffee....
Vinesqueen: I had a real treat last year...a small bag of beans from Zambezi or Zambia whatever....I hope to find another sample....there is a beanery in Boise Idaho that has a fairly large selection of African beans....I will be sure to return there on my next trip to restock....

I use Stevia for everything. I use different varieties for different things. Probably a personal hangup. I don't like the liquid in Yogurt but do in most everything else. Also, there is a variety with fiber. Stevia Plus fiber products. I am attaching the info from my food coop website. Please let me know if this would be a problem after SteviaPlus - Don't sweeten your coffee, supplement it! SteviaPlus is a naturally sweet tasting, highly beneficial product that can be used in all beverages and foods. Convenient for preparing cereal or fruit and stable for both heating and freezing, SteviaPlus is a unique and versatile product that does not have a bitter aftertaste. SteviaPlus has a glycemic index of 0 and does not affect blood sugar. Safe for diabetics, it is 8-10 times sweeter than sugar. Stevia is a small green plant native to Paraguay and provides the intense sweetness for SteviaPlus. SteviaPlus also contains Frutafit Inulin Fiber (FOS), a functional food ingredient found in chicory, fruits and vegetables. Mildly sweet and zero calories per servings, FOS is a premium soluble fiber that selectively nourishes the friendly bacteria (lactobacillus and bifidobacteria) in the intestines. The increased number of these good bacteria will help gastrointestinal functions and may: improve regularity, cleanse the colon, support liver health, assist and strengthen the immune system, help control the formation of free radicals. INGREDIENTS: Frutafit Inulin Fiber (FOS), Stevia Extract (standardized to a minimum of 90% Steviosides, including 40% Rebaudioside A.) Supplement Facts Serving Size: 1/2 packet (1/2 g) Servings per Container: 200 Nutrient Amount %DV Calories 0 Total Fat 0 g 0% Total Carbohydrates less than 1 g 0% Sugars 0 g 0% Frutatin Inulin Fiber 475 mg Stevia Leaf Extract 25 mg - Directions: Due to the high fiber content of this product, stir liquid first, then pour product in and continue to stir. Stir. Pour. Stir.
- 1 pkt - 2 tsp. of sugar
- 4 pkts - the fiber of 1 bowl of cereal
- To prolong shelf life, store in cool, dry place.
- No saccharin, no NutraSweet, no aspartame, no refined sugar, no maltodextrin, no fructose, no artificial sweeteners of any kind.
- Kosher Parve.

Nothing to do with artificial sweetner, but being from Seattle I had to chime in about the coffee talk. My all time favorite is Peets Italian Roast with half and half. I've never understood how folks could put nonfat milk in coffee!--turns it kind of bluish-gray-ech

I use splenda all the time (and yes, I put it in my coffee most of the time, but coffee is best with real sugar, I can't do black). I wonder if maybe it agrivates arthritis, which I don't have, so it doesn't bother me. I also don't have IBS so it doesn't bother me that way either.

I just bought both straight powdered stevia (very sweet) and the packets w/fiber which I can't wait to try tomorrow. Always looking for fiber! I have nothing against splenda, it just worries, especially being a cancer survivor. Jack, I read your post AFTER I bought the stevia...I'll also have to try the liquid.
