Sour cream/plain yogurt

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a big difference in taste between plain yogurt and sour cream.I really enjoyed adding a dry herb package to the sour cream and using it to dip veggies Would plain yogurt be a good subtitute?

read the calorie/nutrion info on the side....sometimes I do use lowfat sour cream as a change in taste...actually I prefer those yoghurts of a more tart flavor anyway...

experimnet and let us know what you find that's good...

la_madam posted a strange 'dessert' I'd never tried before...it was a form of cream cheese (forget the name-starts with "R"...I think) with a spoon or peanut butter....!!! actual quite a taste sensation...

There is a difference as far as consistency goes with the 2. I've used both with dry mixes before, but for different things.

I tend to use the low fat/fat free sour cream with a veggie dip mix, and the plain yogurt with fruit dip mix. The sour cream is thicker, and the plain yogurt is a bit runnier. That's the main difference I've noticed.

Taste wise the sour cream has a stronger taste than a plain yogurt would too. Plain yogurt tends to take on the flavor of the dip mix, but the sour cream tends to add to the flavor of it instead.

As far as nutrition goes, I'd just look at the packages to compare the 2.

Hope this helps!

heres a tip:
Take a small wire mesh strainer, line it with cheese cloth, and put your yogurt in to the cheese cloth. This will drain all of the water and liquid from the yogurt, and you will come up with the same texture and thickness as the sour cream, and it tastes close to the same!

I think there is a huge difference in taste. I adore sour cream, so plain yogurt doesn't even come close. However, I also love plain yogurt, which requires a more grow-up palet. If you can get used to the yogurt taste, then you probably won't miss the sour cream. Or mix both of them together for awhile to ease into yogurt, then eventually nix the sour cream altogether.

Jack - was it ricotta?? On the South Beach diet, you mix ricotta with splenda (or equal, etc) add cinnamon, or some other flavoring, and it makes a low carb sweet treat.
