Soda soda soda

I used to drink lots of soda. I was hooked on Dr. Pepper. Since surgery I've cut it off, but everyone once in awhile, I want a sip. A couple days ago, I took a VERY small sip of my husband's and held it in my mouth until it fizzed up and had no more fizzy bubbles. Can anyone explain the real danger with soda. My doc says no soda, but doesn't really offer a satisfactory reason as to why.

I can live with no soda... and I don't crave it or anything. I've been so good since I cut it out and have been very surprised at my will power regarding this subject, since I have unsuccessfully tried to eliminate it from my diet during pre band life. I'm just wondering about people's perceptions on soda.

I just wrote this somewhere else, but my doctor says the gas from soda can cause slippage. He prohibits it only in the first six months to 12 months after surgery, but I prefer other drinks anyway so I don't see myself going back to it.

Since you are trying to achieve a new level of health, it might be the best to just give up soda. It's so unhealthy, even the diet kind. I wouldn't give soda pouch space, and I used to be a heavy duty coke drinker.

Tbh I can't actually remember what he said but I think he said no pop. I'm just too worried about hurting my band from the carbonation. So I gave it up completely before my surgery and do I miss it - most days, no but on occasion I definitely do. I wasn't a heavy pop drinker before (one can a day (sometimes none), MAYBE 2, that's about it). I'd rather be safe than sorry, funny I cant tell myself the same thing about sweets, *sigh* lol

Well, I can't answer the poll because you're missing a choice:

5) No, because it hurts like hell when I do. Really really really really hurts, for hours afterwards.

the reason i was given is that the carbonation from soda expands the pouch and the goal is to keep the pouch as small as possible. i stopped drinking soda well before my procedure. i am in love with Crystal light and Wylers sugar free Rasberry mix. But i must say.. i need to be able to drink coffee again otherwise something bad may happen to the folks around me before 10am. - lol

Sorry Molly! :) I was trying to think of all the reasons. I missed one!

This makes me feel a little better. Most days I don't miss it, but every once in awhile- I just want to feel that fizz! This week is the first week since my surgery that I've bought it and brought it into my home. Normally my husband will just drink it when we go out or at work or something, but there was a good deal at the store so I thought I would treat him. I think about it everytime I open the fridge, which is probably why it's on my mind. That'll teach me to buy it again.... :)

I agree with this... My doctor said I could have diet soda if it worked for me, but it would be better if I let the glass sit for a while to let some of the bubbles settle. Personally I am not a "huge" soda fan but I use to enjoy a glass once or twice a week. I tried soda the other day for the first time and just a few small sips left me in pain for several hours. I wont do that again. Water or iced tea for me....

I used to be addicted to diet soda (3-4 a day), gave it up before surgery. Ive had sips 1-2x of fountain soda with a lot of ice with out a problem. Just recently however I drank about 4 oz of bottled soda and I was in pain for hours. Just beware.

I HEART Dr Pepper.. we had a really LONG and Loving relationship. *Sigh.. I was seriously addicted.. got sick when I gave it up.. vomiting, headaches and the shakes.. UGH.. I loved the stuff.. I used to kid that I was going to Marry Dr Pepper.. My Daughter thinks that's hilarious.. I still miss it.. but I had given it up a year before I even considered having the band.. and so it wasn't a huge deal when I was told I couldnt have anymore.. I will have a sip of diet every once in a while.. cuz I miss the fizz.. I feel your pain.. I do however doubt seriously that a teeny bit will cause any damage.. but if it was crack and I was a drug addict.. just a little bit could knock me off the wagon..so.. choose your poison! Good Luck!

For all you soda addicts...if you give it up...in time it does get better!

I was the queen of Big Gulps and Tab in Highschool...then diet this and diet that.....as a new teacher..I was the one carrying around the diet soda, not a mug of hot java, in the morning (24 years ago!)

Then when I was prego I switched to non diet kind so back to decaf DR. P I went...oh yummy...that was 21 years ago...along the way I tried to just slow down on it all...then in 2000 I gave it up cold turkey...switched to a GIANT iced coffee that I sipped on all day. ( I would go to 7-11 or whatever and fill a 64 oz full of ice then pour coffee and some cream/sweatner in...sip all day...it turned out to be about 10 oz of coffee in all that ice....

At any rate, then I said no more soda....

Well, here it is 2008 and THEY said, "NO SODA!!" it causes your pouch to expand...and it is empty calories, and if diet...too much sweatner makes you crave sugar...

YIPEE for me...NO PROBLEMO!!!

Now, I have done away with caffine pretty well lately...I do love ice tea but I am used to just water with lemon...I don't really care for any flavored kool aid stuff so...water it is....after banding....I will go back to a bit of coffee or tea but not for the first month was the directive I was given.

The best part is....Soda is pricey and especially ordering out. Water is cheaper! Watch, they will start charging for the requested lemon slice!

Good Luck!

Honestly, I used to be a major diet coke addict as well. I drank it for breakfast, lunch, dinner and non-stop in between. I thought I would die when my doctor said I would have to give it up for the band. I used to crave it so bad. Then, one day I had a small sip of my hubby's and was shocked. I didn't like the taste, texture or anything anymore. Now I don't miss it at all.

I've been off pop (yes, I call it pop!) since around the first of the year. I haven't really missed it either. I do have a band friend who drinks diet pepsi everyday and doesn't seem to have a problem. I prefer to stick with water and crystal light for now.
