Question Protein Shakes

My Dr. will have me on 1 week clear liquids, second week- full liquids. At what stage is protein shakes added. I read on a post that a nurse mentioned U could have egg beater in protein shake for added protein. Does anyone know about this & if so what stage would it be?
I like milk, egg beater, van. flavoring. to me this is a great shake.
I'm new to board, just certified, will have my surgery date next week.

Did your Dr mention the protien shakes to you?? I was told that I could have anything that went through a straw the day I had the surgery. The next day after my surgery I had one...Every Dr is different...Good Luck to You!

Yes, every doctor's instructions are different. I did not have to do clear liquides - just liquids. I wouldn't think protein shakes would be counted as clear liquids. They are too thick for that. Clear liquids are things like apple juice, broth, gatorade, jello, black coffee, tea.

If it would go through a straw I "drank" it. TG for the mushy stage!

Ann, Congratulations on your upcoming Banding! The protein shake is either premixed shakes (ex. Atkins Advantage canned 11 oz. 20 grams protein) or adding protein powder to your milk/egg beater mixture. I just bought the protein powder from Walmart/Sams. Just plain milk wouldn't give you enough protein. You need to aim for 60 grams of protein a day. After you get on full liquids, you can blend a little fruit in (ex. banana, frozen stawberries, blueberries, etc.) This makes it like a smoothie (delicious), but don't put too much fruit in or it's too thick. Once you get on solids, if you're eating healthy choices (lean, moist meats, and vegetables) - you shouldn't have any trouble getting your daily protein in.
