Heyas Rene, this list was shared for people who come home with no instructions. You'd be surprised how many folks show up with no idea about what they should be eating. Scarey but true. My doctor gave me very clear guidelines as well and I follow those. Like you, I strongly advise everyone to follow doctor's orders above anything they read here, unless you suspect negligence of course.

The puddings, icecream, sweetened tea, lemonade, etc, is off the list because they are loaded with sugar and fat so they are counter productive to your weight loss. Fat free and sugar free substitutes are fine. After the liquid phase of the diet, most liquid calories are taboo for obvious reasons. Far too many calories can just slip by the band, bypassing its inteded design to restrict quantity. I hope this helps. :)

I guess I haven't gotten to this stage in my exploration. I am waiting for insurance letter. I didn't realize that there was 1-2 weeks pre op liquid diet. Now it makes sense when I see those weights and the day of surgery there is a significant weight loss from the time of appointment. This board is great. I'm scared, but excited.

Hmm.. the carb free icecream. I would suggest looking carefully at the fat and calories in that. Icecream is one of the danger foods for a bandster because it can get through that band so easily. If you think you can have just a bit, and you count the calories in your daily intake, I guess you could. But for me, I'd rather "spend" my calories on food that's going to stick with me and not leave me hungry or craving more.

I'm not a big sweet eater, so this isn't much of a problem for me. I know many here buy fat free, sugar free jellos, puddings and ice creams. I read an idea the other day.. dip fresh fruit in fat free sugar free Hershey's chocolate syrup. There are 100 calorie packs of snacks you can buy, but for me, this would be a killer to my weightloss. Why? Because I wouldn't eat just one pack! LOL There are several foods which I have just resolved to keep out of my life, even if I can find the FF/SF versions because I know they trigger more cravings which I just don't want to face.

If you check out the food forum, I'm sure you'll find many good suggestions.

re: "I wouldn't eat just one pack!"

actually, my experience has been just the opposite....I tried one of these 100 calorie packs....a box of 'oreo cookies'.....thin wafers with lots of crispy crunch and just the right hint of oreo favor....and ONE pack is plenty for me.....

I got the box of 6 about 3 weeks ago...and still have 3 left.....they are 'just right'.....in that there really is a LOT of bits in there....and they give me a chance to realize it ISN'T HUNGER I'm trying to feed...

I keep them in the rig, as they are very handy for those....moments...that and about 6 jugs of water are very beneficial for my own travels...

I also keep a few of the individual soups handy, as at times I end up stuck on the freeway too close to meal time...

One pack is plenty, even without a band. Whatever they are made with gives me severe stomach issues if a try to eat more than 1 bag. This is especially true with Pringles, wheat thins, and the Ritz snack.

I suspect the products giving you problems are made with that fat subtitute - I can't remember what it's called - you know, the no-fat fat substitute. When it first came out I remember there were a LOT of people with 'stomach issues'. Maybe not though.

That was the conclusion I came to also. It was a good way to control me when my own self control didn't work.

Unhappy

Hi all,

I hope to get banded soon. (PLEASE GOD!!)

I liked the diet listed - CERTAINLY a person would lose a lot of weight during the 2 weeks on liquids and 2 weeks on mushies - this is why I don't understand people that say it took them 6 months to start to lose weight. How can this be?

Secondly, I think I could do that diet IF I felt full after my meals. Some people here complain they don't fill full though? Can anyone explain this? Isn't feeling full early the main reason for the surgery?
Thanks! Bella

re: "I think I could do that diet IF I felt full after my meals. Some people here complain they don't fill full though? "

Most excellent question here!!!

IMHO, the issue we MUST come to grips with, is not 'feeling FULL'....which is why I for one overate for decades....

the REAL issue is to recognize SATIETY....which is a different sensation....

"FULL" to me is a physical and emotional issue; 'Hunger' may well continue even though we are 'full'....

"SATIATED" is a physiological stage with various chemoreceptors telling us we are no longer 'hungry'....and thereby our eating behavior should 'stop'.....

My theory is that 'hunger' in those such as myself, is not related ONLY to such matters as 'how much did you stuff in your mouth'...

There is something wrong along the line somewhere, sort of like just
last week when the post office delivered 5 copies of the same magazine, all with the same label.....

Red face

Okay - thanks for the clarification.

The reason I used the word 'full' is because the literature that I've read says with the smaller stomach you will be 'full'.

So when I'm reading about people being hungry etc.. I'm wondering how that can be if your stomach is tiny and you'll already filled it up.

I'm no referring to emotional hunger here.

Bella:

I don't want to mislead you....this particular differentiation is my own quibble....other Bandsters use the word in the same way...

this is for ME, an incredibly important difference because all my life I overate....and "full" is not the issue I believe is truely important...

welcome to BandLand and good cheer on your journey.....

Hello Marg -
Most doctors recommend liquids for a week, then mushies for a week, then soft foods, then what you can tolerate. I've got to tell you, although I think you are doing a hell of a job, I could not do the same. I'm not into suffering and therefore would not be able to do what you are doing. Soft eggs are just fine - but before you start eating, write a little plan of just would be okay for you - and then don't cross that line.
But please, relax and enjoy life, with all it's tastes and textures... Just do it smartly.
Best wishes,
