...I had a life long love of breads and pasta....till Banding....

I don't miss 'em, don't care for 'em, have only had 2 pieces of toast since Banding, don't care to ever taste pasta or breads again...

I know it sounds a bit looney....not only do I not have the desire, it doesn't even sound good...

I can't even get enthusiastic about bagels, pizza, cakes, etc....

my tastes have changed, and I don't have the sensation of being deprived...

Jack,

Great to know there's hope! I am hoping my tastes will be different when I go on solids.

Thanks,

freaking me out

I am reading post here and I had no idea it was that miserable of an experience after gastric banding. I just went for my first 4 hour appt today, psych eval, labs and ekg today, tomorrow I go for the other 4 hour appt; NP, PT, dietician and psych eval follow up, I go saturday for my sleep study, then I go to a surgeon.
I had decided last month to do this, and decided on the band because it seems safer. But I just read all these research articles that say the weight loss is not that good and the re-op's are high. So here I am searching for real people with real stories. I am torn... I need to lose ~120lbs to be back to my high school weight of 150. Is this possible with the band? Or do I need bypass?
I hope I can figure out this web site, I don't know How I got here or how to get back. If you don't hear from me I got lost in the shuffle.
email me with any advise.

Rena,

Don't give up on banding. I am post-op by 3 weeks and just went back on solid food. I want to loose 135lbs and have lost 22lbs. so far. I know this will slow down and I too had heard that with the band weight loss was not as fast as the by-pass, but I am so glad I did not have the other one. I know someone who had the gastric bypass the same week I did and they are still in bed, on pain meds, and restricted diet/excercise.
I was working from home the Monday after a Friday surgery and traveling across the country for work the following week. I went through a rough patch on the liquid diet (thought I was crazy for having the surgery) but am so happy now! :)

I have not had a fill yet but can tell a huge different in how much I can eat but still eat the things I love. My tastes have changed some, but not dramatically.

The research I did shows that the weight loss evens out after 2 yrs., we will just lose it more slowly and at a steadier pace.

Good luck no matter what you choose! Be sure and post back on how you are!

HI Rena,

Welcome to LBT! To get back to the main page of the section you're in, or the parent section, just follow the links at the top of the page.

As far as this story being scary, please know that it is NOT AT ALL the usual post-op experience. Most people experience only a few days of pain and very little if any problems with the liquid diet.

Go to the Introductions section and post a little about yourself if you like, otherwise please feel free to start a new thread in any section with whatever questions you have. Not many people are going to see your questions here, I don't think.

Rena -

Whatever made you think this was a waste of time.
I had surgery only 6 weeks ago and already lost 30 pounds. This is not a quick fix and my doctor made me fully aware of that. You still have to follow a diet, you have to exercise and you have to follow up with your health care providers. Yes, as my doctor told me ice cream will go down - so you do need the will power to handle this. What it does is decrease the capacity of your stomach, but you need to learn what to eat, how to eat (very slowly) and when to stop eating. You can do this. I thoroughly recommend a support group in your area. I love going to mine and I come home with some solid information every time that I can definately put to good use.

Whatever you do, don't give up - it is definately worth it!

Eileen

I am 9 days post op. finally feel good. it was those damn staples!
I had about 4 days of the "what have I done!" Have to be really careful of what I eat, and only mushy threw a straw stuff. For me the socialization that came with meals. Ladies at work would go out and for 2 weeks not me. Yesterday a great friend call all resturants in town (ok theres only 5) and found a mushy creamy soup for me, so I went and my feeling of not being included were gone.

It took about 7 days for me to feel like a person again, Dr said liquids only for 1st week, I could not continue. the stomach acid was so strong it was forcing upwards. I ate gas x but did find small amounts of Yoplaid whips yogards with the air stirred out so it just ran down gave me some nutrients and the feeling of full. pretty much lived on whipped yogart until day 8 then went to creamy soups. 1 week post op visit, everything good, staples out and now on mushies. hard to believe we get excited about malto meal and mashed pot.

Hang tough, you will feel better, I would say it gets better each day, but ya know one day is great and the next will suck for the first little bit. It will get better and this too shall pass.

Rena, my DH has lost almost 200 pounds so far. I can speak for myself here, I was a big baby and needed to whine. Couldn't even have cheese with my whine either. :D
