Why sugar free?

I am currently waiting for Insurance approval for the lap-band®.

When my Doc and dietitian told me that after the lap-band® I need to eat sugar free, I just accepted it as fact. No more than 5 grms of sugar per serving. But my mom asked me if there was a medical reason for this. I have just been going on "because they said so". Is there a particular medical reason behinds this other than to get you on a healthier diet?

Thanks!!

I think bypass patients must not eat sugar rich foods because of the dumping syndrome. However, I think we can but it is not advisable for weight loss. I know I was sucking on a lollipop soon after surgery (2 days post-op) because I could not eat hardly anything, the nut said it was OK but not to make it a habit. Then again I am not sure.

I believe- but am not sure- that is because sugar spikes your sugar levels, giving you a high, followed by a crash and desire to eat more sugar to get back on that high. And the cycle keeps going, and we keep gaining.... so no sugar, the cycle is broken and we lose faster.
