I am not banded yet. I have 13 pounds to lose before I can get my surgery scheduled. So, if I only have 13 pounds to lose, why in the heck can't I stick to my program??? Last week I did great, only cheated twice, and started walking every night. When I got on the scale Monday, I gained 4 pounds. How did I gain 4 pounds??? So, I was at only having to lose 9 pounds, but now I am back to having to lose 13 pounds. The gain of 4 pounds has really stressed me out. It was a HUGE disappointment. I am so close to having surgery, but the scale is going the wrong way. So, instead of being hard-core on my plan, I have been cheating all week (ice cream, cake, bagels, coke, chicken nuggets). I know if I stepped on the scale right now, I won't be happy. Then I start stressing about how will I manage to do what I need to once I get banded. It is all a vicious cycle. I am soooo close to getting the band. I am frustrated, disappointed, pissed, stressed, and just want to scream (and eat)!!!!! I need some MAJOR encouragement. :help:
Don't understand why you need to lose weight before the surgery - isn't this what the surgery is for? To help you out!! In Australia - my part of it anyway - we have no pre op diet at all - in fact I ran amok leading up to surgery. Or is it a health with operation thing?? Anyway - hang in there - if you have to do it just think it won't be long until you will have more help (band) and it will be easier. Wishing you all the success in the world.
My surgeon required the pre-op weight loss for 2 reasons. One, to shrink the liver prior to surgery to make positioning the band easier and the second was to see how committed I was to a new way of life and new way of eating.
CajonCutie, what kind of program are you on? I did protein shakes for 2 meals a day and one SMALL meal, usually fish or soup, and you will lose your required weight. Just make sure the protein shakes are not high in calories/carbs
Good luck, It really is worth it

For heaven sakes, don't weigh yourself everyday. It will make you crazy. . . Your daily weight depends on the time of the month, how much water, etc. you have had to drink that day, the humidity outside, all kinds of things. Please resist the temptation to weigh everyday and just stick to your program, it will be worth it in the end. :) Hang in there, you can do it. :clap2:
I wish all doctors requires a 2 week pre-op optifast liquid diet. It sounds harsh ..and it was ..but it was SO worth it in the end. I did not have to think about what I was going to eat ..because I knew I COULDN'T eat. And it was easier to head into the weeks following surgery where all you can have is liquids anyway.
Don't feel badly ..instead TAKE ACTION ..contact your doctors office and nutritionist and ask for diet guidelines. I really recommend a liquid diet. I lost 18 pounds in 2 weeks.
You can do this! It is so very important for your health.
Cajun-what worked for me was 6 or 7 high protein meals. I went for about 1600 calories a day-What really helped is eating before I got really hungry. I would always have to be prepared so I would have something high protein to eat anywhere I went. I also started walking every night, I lost about 2-4 lbs per week. I started at 330 and was down to 275 for surgery. My doctor did not require it-but I had to prove to myself I was able to make a serious commitment to the band. Take it one meal at a time-You can do it!

Hi there, some people in Australia do have to diet prior to the op. I didn't, just told to cut down a week prior but some people who are bigger than me have been told to go on Optifast (glad I wasn't one of them)... all to do with shrinking the liver to make the op easier. Anyway, I'm about 1/2 off leaving for the hospital !! :whoo::whoo:

My doctor only requires 5 days of pre-op diet. He feels that lack of proper nutrition prior to a surgery will prolong the healing process. If your body is stressed and then stressed further with surgery, it will take longer to heal. I asked about shrinking the liver, and he felt that he could achieve the level he needed in 5 days. He stated that if you know what you're doing you don't need more than that.
