sip? What is it? A mouthful? A barely anything in your mouth? I find that I am not gulping water, but I would liken it to a swig.....not a sip...a sip to me is maybe a 1/2 teaspoon...a swig is more like a tablespoon...any thoughts? I am soooooooooooooooooooooooooo thirsty now after surgery...I have absolutely no problem getting in my water but I am wondering if I could be drinking too much. Can water stretch out pouch? Deanna

That's a great question. To me, a sip is just a little mouthful. Like a quick, well, lol, sip. That is a hard one to answer. I know when I gulp you can here it. I don't think you can stretch it by drinking. I was talking to my surgeon Monday about stretching your pouch and slippage of your band and it's not as easy as it seems when you read about it on here. The signs of slippage are very evident once they explained what would happen. Good luck and congrats on your sugery.

For me a sip is less than a mouthful, it's about the equivalent to what you take in when you're "slupring" a hot drink.

well, both of you explained sipping way better than I ever could. I guess that sometimes I do way more than a sip but never do I gulp. I dont know. I am wondering how if you only sip...can they realistically expect you to get in all that water....especially if you have a job where you are on the phone all day or talking to people all day. You cant have a bottle stuck out of your mouth...hey now theres an idea...maybe they could just hook us lapbanders up with an IV and then we wouldnt have to sip all day!!!:biggrin1:

I don't sip. Pre-op I was a major guper and I can't gulp as fast/much now, but I'm still a fast drinker. The onyl time I can't is when my esophagus is a little full, and then you know right away you've done something wrong.
I don't know that you can stretch the esophagus with fluids. I'd think they would back up before they would cause deformity. That is, assuming they do anything other than funnel right through.

i drink too fast and too much and i know it. It seems i'm thirsty all the time and i rarely get the opportunity to eat or drink much of anything at work. When i finally get home,,its almost midnight and i cant get eunough to drink and i eat something small. I had my one and only so far fill last month,,,i dont notice any difference,,but i'm still losing weight. Every once in a while,,if i eat early in teh morning or take too big a bite or not chew well,,it feels like a big glob is stuck in my throat. I go back to my doctor on the 17th,,so i guess i'll find out more then.

I have a hard time measuring my sips too. What i did was purchase 1 oz cups from a restraunt supply store. (They are the little plastic lids with cups that you get from restraunts that have lids...and they are washable or you can just throw them away). I usually sip half and then the other half a few minutes later.

These last posts have really been helpful! I have had a hard time getting down enough water. My body seems to adjust better to juice than water. I know I should not dring much, if any, juice but sometimes it is the only liquid that will staay down. I try to keep some type of liquid around all day so I am constantly trying to sip/drink something and prevent getting dehydrated. I appreciate knowing other people have been working on the same thing!

| When were you banded? Water and other fluids of the same viscosity should always go down. If you cannot keep water or other fluids down, methinks you might be too tight!

Thank you for the response to my post. I am not computer savy enough to put all my stats in automaticaly. I was banded in Mexico
3-28-06. The band is 9.75 ccs. I started at 233 lbs. I did fine with my first fill of .8. In fact, it provided very little restriction. I got that fill about 5 weeks post surgery. The next fill went up to 2.0ccs, according to the doctor's documentation. Then he went to 2.8. We then went through the summer reducing the fill amount due to inflammation, etc. We got down to 1.3 In August and I had lost about 35 lbs. At that point I started having lots of problems with any amount and was unfilled several times. I would wait several weeks for everything to calm down and then start to slowly build up. He would add a small amount (0.2). If that was comfotable, he added a little more.Any time we hit 1.5, I would be fine for about a week and then the inflammation started, not being able to eat, etc. This went on through the fall-back and forth to the doctor's office almost every week or two. It was also expensive! But, he was really patient and kept working with me to find the 'sweet spot'. I am now at only .6 and have been here since 3-19-07. The band may be a bit tight but I can live with it and am losing weight again. I stayed at 160 lbs.for months and months. I now weigh 155 and am losing slowly but that is OK with me. So, I try to mix water with juice, drink soups, protein drinks, small amounts of food, etc. This may not be the recommended way to procede but it is working for me and I have been able to stay out of the doctor's office for almost 2 months!:clap2:
