Red face Up 2lbs!!! - is this usual?!

:faint: I have been on mushies for about 5 days now and was so happy with my weight loss so far( I'd lost 16lbs since starting the liquid diet pre-op) ......... then I weighed myself this morning only to discover that I'm up 2lbs. To say I was gutted was an understatement. I don't want to become a bathroom scale neurotic and weigh myself every day - but has anyone else discovered that they have put on a little weight during this time?
I suppose logically it was bound to happen, but was hoping I would just maintain until my first fill.
I was banded on 8th May and am due to go away on 19th June, can anyone out there tell me whether I'll be able to have my first fill before I go? I will have been banded 6 weeks by then. After the first fill does the doc need to see you again in a few days to check how it's going or are you left to your own devices?

JaMMY,
It happened to me. It was so hard!!! I was trying so hard to stick to the guidelines . You sound like you do understand what is going on with your body so I won't go into it .

It still doesn't make it any easier.

This is what I would do if I was up a few lbs. I would deny deny DENY in my mine. I kept it to myself. I would claim (if anyone asked) my low weight.

I would stay off the scales for 3 to 4 days and when I got back on I would be the low weight or lower.

I would white lie (lol) because I didn't want to hear ANYTHING negative.

I also had 5 plateaus in my 8 month journey. One lasted a whole month.

Those still were not as hard as a gain for me.

I feel your pain.

Now is the time to heal. I gained 6 lbs when I went to mushies so don't feel so bad. Once you start to get your fills you will start to lose weight. It just takes time for your body to get use to solid meals. You will be fine.

I went in for my first fill, or so I thought, and came home without one. She said I had lost so much weight that they wanted me to keep going for as long as I could without doing a fill. She did point out my port to me though...right where I thought it was....I can feel it plain as day. So, now I have to wait another month to go back....I really really hope I can stay in control and keep this weight off and lose some more. I didnt gain any weight going to mushies but I can see how that can happen easily. THEY TASTE SO DANG GOOD!!! After drinking for so long...I really think you will be fine..you are not restricted from the surgery anymore and the swelling is down so you can eat more...Good luck...Deanna

It's totally normal! You might get up tomorrow and see you have lost 4 pounds. Just worry about healing right now!

This is why I only weigh myself at my doctor appointments.. Probably not the BEST decision for all, But my clothes are feeling loose and I am working out and just feel great. I don't want to get depressed If I do not see the scale move. I can see the weight coming off slowly - like it should and am fine with that for now.

The nutritionist was thrilled that I don't weigh myself at home. She said she wished more people would do that to keep from getting discouraged.

However! That is normal. One woman at the appointment said she keeps going up and down with 3 lbs.

I was going to go out and buy a scale, but my friend, who's been banded for five years now and has lost over 100 pounds, told me her doctor forbade her to weigh herself anywhere other than the doctor's office.

Weight fluctuates day to day, due to water retention, salt intake, etc. It's how you feel in your clothes, in your body, that matters. If you're working out, you're going to gain pounds, because muscle weighs more than fat, so don't freak out!

Good luck and welcome to Lap Land! :kiss2:

Same here. Gained 2 pounds when I went to mushie's. Had my post op exam today and Dr was apologetic to me. I'm not worried though. I got a long way to go. Will just do my best and let the scale land where it may.

What a relief to hear all of this. I was banded on April 30 and doing really well on the scale until the real food returned. It must be the bodies way of coping and storing some real food for a change. Over three days, I gained 3 pounds back. It took four days for those 3 pounds to go away.

It sounds like it is time to put the scale away and only check once a week or so.

What a unique fraternity we have here. So many different people in so many different places, yet all with the same hope.

Journey On!

I just want to second the people who encourage you to stay off the scale. I think that people (like us) who find themselves with a lot of extra weight tend to have obsessive and addictive personalities. We obsess about food so we overeat. (Bear with my generalizations). When we try to combat the food addiction, other things crop up. Addictio to weighing. Exercising. Smoking. Internet posting. Etc. Some new addictions are ok and some are not. Weighing is not, IMO.

I wish my doc would tell me to only weigh at appointments. I did not weigh myself between surgery and first fill. I didn't even have a scale that worked.

I had my first fill on May 9. I was told to start weighing myself to see if the fill is sufficient and to call for an earlier fill if the scale isn't moving (my next fill is set for July). I got a scale but still haven't weighed myself! I think I'm going to do it on June 9, one month out from my fill.

So stay off the scale! It will only torment you to anguish over the gain of a pound or two.

Biological reason for weight gain on mushies

When you're at the liquid stage it tends to be low in carbs. One of the reasons that we lose so quickly on liquids is that the liver can store up to 100 grams of glycogen (which comes from carbs). And for every gram of glycogen there is additional water/fluids stored as well.

As we diet (especially low carb versions) the glycogen stores are depleted and the excess water is excreted as well. Once you start eating carbs again, the glycogen is built back up in the liver and water is retained as well.

So...when you start eating more carbs, your weight will jump up quickly because the liver is restoring the lost glycogen and water.

Good news...the regained weight isn't fat...it's just replenishment of what the body naturally stores in the liver.
