Protein shakes?

My surgery is on July 30th (I can't wait!!!) and I'm starting to think about the meal replacement shakes for the pre-op diet. Any suggestions? (brands, flavors, tips and money savers!?) Thanks!

I bought a zillion samples from www.vitalady.com a couple of weeks ago so that I could experiment before I actually "needed" them. I've enjoyed the ProBlend 55 and Syntha-6 chocolates. I've discovered that all of the vanillas are icky (IMO) unless they are put into oatmeal or cream of wheat. I also tried an Atkins milk chocolate ready-made shake and it was pretty good. To be honest with you, the Atkins stuff is plenty good enough. I don't know if I could use it for maintenance, but I'm pretty sure that I could do ok with it for 2-3 weeks.

Hope this helps!

Good luck on your big day!! I'm 5 days post-op and so thankful that I made the decision to get control of my life!! As far as the liquid diet, I tried to keep a bit of variety - but, my 2 standbys - Slimfast: Chocolate and the Vanilla flavors. I also drank several shakes from Smoothie King (chain). Just check out the calories on their website before you go - some range in the THOUSANDS! My favorite - High Protein shake w/ Pineapple flavoring - yummy and under 200 calories!

Hi I am currently on the pre-op protein shake diet as well for my 7/24 surgery. I haven't tried to many options, but the 1 that I did buy is yummy! It is Muscle Milk LIGHT in the milk chocolate flavor. They make about 6 different flavors. I just ordered chocolate peanut butter too, but it hasn't arrived yet. Each flavor has 25g of protein per serving and 195 calories. I mix mine in a blender with ice, 1/2 cup of skim milk, and about 7-8oz of water. I think having it thicker and blended helps my mind to think that I'm fuller, lol. So far I haven't really been hungry (knock on wood) with it. I can have 2 shakes a day and 1 lean cuisine meal.

Oh and I bought the 1st 1 at Vitamin world on sale for $25 for a 1.65LB tub. The new 1, I ordered from Vitacost.com for $26 because the sale was over at VW. Good Luck!

The protein bullets are my favorite! I can't do those thick shakes. The bullets are the consistency of jello before it sets. I mix it with crystal light. 1/2 of the fruit punch bullet mixed with fruit punch crystal light is my favorite.

I'm scheduled for August 25. The only drink I've tried is Atkins chocolate. It's good...not "real" tasty, but no real gross aftertaste. My doc said not to use ensure or slim fast.

Hi,

Just wondered if you know why not to use slim fast. Am due to get banded on 12th August and have only been advised to follow very low fat diet for 2 weeks prior to op which I started 3 days ago. Have been having 2 slimfast shakes a day plus 1 slimfast soup and lots of fruit. Advice much appreciated. I live in the UK,

Thanks everhopeful x

Regular Slim-Fast shakes are loaded in sugar (40gm). If you were told you can have the atkins shakes, then you can have the slim-fast shakes that are titled Lo-Carb, The high protein ones will even be okay, but not for every meal.

I like to make my own shakes with fat free - sugar free soy milk (vanilla), Whey Protein (25gm protein per scoop), and either a banana or a peach. Put them in a blender and puree it. You an try other fruits and flavors.

I thought that I was good to go with the Muscle Mile and then my "Nut" said not, too much fat.
