Why do you have to loose weight before surgery? The pre op diet is to shrink your liver, if you loose weight great but the fact is the reason your on the pre op diet is to shrink your liver so that when the surgeon goes to operate it's not fatty and it's easier to do the surgery. And as for the wait, it's only 2 days, if I was told I might be able to get in 2 days earlier I definetly would do it, but that's just me - Good luck!

The way to lose fat from your liver is to lose weight. My doctor told me the liver is one of the first places the weight comes off of. I asked him, well, I'm X pounds, what about someone who is 200 pounds more than me, they lose 10 pounds before surgery and they're still X pounds more than I am right now without losing weight, so what difference does it make? He said if that person weighed 200 pounds more than me he would have them lose more weight on the pre-op diet than me. You can't shrink the liver without losing pounds.

I lost my weight on the pre-op diet by drinking MediFast drinks and eating low carb dinners (a chicken breast and green beans, for example).

Good luck to you!

I had to loose 20 pounds before I could have my surgery. My doctor was not shy about telling you that he would post pone the surgery if you did not loose the weight. It did not matter how much you weighed. Upon my initial consultation, I was weighed and I had to sign an acknowledgement form stating that I had to loose 20 pounds or the surgery would be put off until I did. Eating low carb and drinking protein drinks worked for me. I did it the last two weeks before surgery.

I had to do the liqued diet for three weeks, I losy 21 lbs...No sugar no carbs. I drank Atkins drinks and sugar fee jell and sf popsicles, and egg flour soupp that I made. I also drank 64+ oz of water a day. I am now on two protein drinks a day and one meal ( I eat chicken grilled no oil, vegies and salad)
My doc said he likes everyone to loose weight it is safer for the surgery and our health. I look at the pre op diet as a jump start to the road ahead and a new life.
Its been one month with no carbs, no sugar (except what might be in my food very minnimal) best of luck to you onthe road ahead.......:)

My doctor pushes high protein and very low carb. I was told no Slim Fast (or anything that says "Meal Replacement" on the can)because it is higher in carbs...Atkins is better. Also protein powders, chicken or beef broth, sugar free popsicles, sugar free jello.

Most doctors require you to diet in order to shrink the liver because the liver needs to be moved during the surgery. But I think some require patients to lose weight too to test how serious they are about the lap band.

i LOVE the slimfast optima but unfortunately my dietician said that the optima has too much sugar and too many carbs :( i was told to buy the slimfast low carb shake instead but it isn't nearly as good.

I would switch to drinking the Low Carb Slim Fast or Atkins shakes 5X a day and a meal of no more than 400 calories. This was suggested by my nutritionist and it works. I only had to lose 14 pounds but would've lost more if I stuck to it. Since I know that's all I have to lose before surgery I've yo-yo'ed because of this, but know I could've lost more had I stuck to it.

my doctor doesn't like slimfast either according to his medical assistant. ... the smell choked me up in the high protein

he prefers a brand called "Unjury" protein power... i start it today.

question: what flavor Atkins' do you like ... his med asst. says that's her favorite kind...

my liver is my issue too; along with losing the weight also or my surgery is pushed back... what ever it takes I shall not eat but drink for the next two weeks in hopes my surgery goes on 6/30

tmkey, I like the Chocolate delight and vanilla flavored Atkins shakes. I just started my mushies today after four weeks of liquid. Good luck it is tough but it is worth it...just take it one day at a time.

If you don't like the Low Carb SF then you probably won't like the Atkins either. Both of them aren't sweet like regular SF and a similar in taste. It's an acquired taste. I like the chocolate and vanilla.

I thought Unjury was ok but I got hungry sooner than I did when I drank the SF. I'm glad I was able to get a couple of samples of it before buying it because I would've been disappointed otherwise. Many people like it tho.

I'm drinking 4 - 6 oz protein shakes with 5 carrots (it's the only veggie i have that doesn't need to sit in a fridge) and then I have grilled chicken or fish and a side of veggies for dinner. I just started this diet so I'm hoping to shed some pounds before I meet with the doc. Hopefully by then I've dropped so much that I won't have to drop anymore or have so few that I can just go to the bathroom to lose it.
