My doctor dosen't have me on a pre-op diet...

I just have to have nothing but liquids the day before and nothing at all midnight before surgery. Is this normal? Don't I have to reduce the fat around my liver?... or does it just make it eaiser for the surgeon and mine dosen't need the aid (which is the impression I got from the doc's office)?

Your pre-op diet is typical for this procedure.

It was just like mine.

Honestly I don't think there is typical. It seems different doctors do different things. I personally don't see my doctor for my first consult and I am dieting because I am really really freaked out that they even touch my liver. Don't have a clue why that seems so freaky to me but I want mine to be as tiny as I can get it. But really it seems some doctors have people on liquids up to 2 weeks some don't, some have patients diet some don't. I read a book from my library on a woman who had gastric bypass and two days before went out for Ruth Chris steak!! There is a poll on here about did your doctor require a pre op diet you might check out that thread. It made me decide there is no typical.

I had a low calorie, low fat diet to follow for two weeks before surgery and clear liquids for two days before surgery.

My Dr now has patients on protein shakes two weeks before surgery.

My Dr. said if I am on the pre op diet (two weeks of optifast) then that will shrink the liver. He said he can do the operation just fine with no pre op diet, but it will take longer. The shorter the operation, less time under general anesthesia means less and easier recovery time.

I'm being banded on Tuesday, the pre op diet was terrible but I'm hoping it was worth it.

hi, Some more thoughts.... I don't want to get anyone with a different opinion mad. I've never heard of a Doc, saying it is BAD to be on a low fat diet prior to Surgery. Some require (like mine) to be on a low fat, all liquid diet.
Mostly, it seems to be an issue of the size of the liver. The operation can be done with a large liver. The issue is the ease and time of the operation. If the liver is small, the operation is easier.
Now, it seems to me that to some degree the Drs, want to say they have the skill and can do the operation either way... but if it can be easier, less time under general, why not?
So is a low fat diet necessary? no. Is it a good idea...... Up to you.

MY doc also has me on a pre op diet of optifast, an all liquid diet for two weeks prior to surgery. It is to shrink the liver.

I will need to do 2 weeks of Optifast when my time comes. My doc said he did it himself to see what his patients go through---I was impressed with that!

My doctor had me on no diet. She said that there was not enough research to support torturing me with that. She did say that people with fatty livers are a different story, but for me and my normal size liver I would not have to do anything.

no pre op diet required here; every doc has their own requirements.

My surgeon requires a liquid only two week pre-op diet. Haven't started that since I dont have a surgery date yet but I am NOT looking forward to that. It gonna suck!

My doc requires no pre-op diet either... I just have to drink the stuff that clears you out the night before surgery. I hope my liver isn't huge! LOL (OK not really laughing...)

I had a 2 week full liquid diet pre-op.Not really necessary but a good Idea anyway. It just sort of gets you use to what its going to ne like for about 3 or 4 weeks after.
