Help-Need an Answer on Sleep Study

I am having a sleep study tomorrow night. If they find apnea will it delay my surgery. Do I have anything to worry about?

Thanks,
Wanda

wanda,
actually, my doctor said NO it does not delay your surgery. But, when you are coming out of surgery, they will mask and watch you incase you stop breathing.
I am not a doctor, but this is the answer I got from both my docs...
Hugs!!

I did find out that I had sleep apnea. But they still scheduled my surgery for their first available appointment which was about 4 weeks out. My question if anyone knows is this: I started using a cpap machine Monday night. If I lose a lot of weight after my LAP-BAND® should I just stop using the machine or wait & have another sleep study. Those things aren't cheap. Even with good insurance I still owe about $500 & they only cover 1 per year.

I can't imagine why they would change your surgery date unless you couldn't get a c-pap machine before you were scheduled.

The only reason they want you to bring it is so they can put it on you when you are asleep after surgery.

when I had a hysterectomy I forgot to bring mine and the hospital brought me one to use.

Have you ever been told you snore?

Have your cats and dog stopped sleeping with you and sleep as far away as possible?

Has your husband or partner taken to sleeping on the living room sofa?

Then you know you have sleep apnea.

after I lost 40 pounds I no longer needed the cpap. i was exercising and that combined with the weight loss, i think, made me sleep fine. not sleeping was the reason I had the sleep study in the first place. To me, when that was resolved, i no longer needed it. I talked with the doctor about it at my next visit & told her I had stopped using it but was sleeping fine. She was fine with that. I had also stopped taking my blood pressure meds but was monitoring bp daily- it was fine as well. Just keep in touch with the doc! Good luck!

That was so me. I do have a dog that sleeps with me. When we moved 2 years ago, I decided I wanted my own bedroom. I know I snore because I wake myself up!

Thanks for the info.

I have a CPAP machine - took it to the hospital with me and never had a problem at all. I am one of the few people that I know that LOVE their machine. I sleep so much better and it doesn't bother me one bit. I don't know if I would stop using even if I could ---the humidity is so great, but I didn't wear it one night and my husband said I snored again.:-(
I haven't lost 40#'s yet but am on my way

SD Chick-I too love my cpap machine. Of course, some day I would like to sleep without it, but until then, I keep clean and available at all times. Once I lose another 25 lbs. I think I'll ask my dr. for another sleep study.

Sleep Apnea-C-Pap

JRFAN,
I used a C-Pap before my surgery, as well as an oxygen machine attached to it. It didn't make any difference in the scheduling of my surgery and they suggested I bring the machine with me to use in the recovery room. Truthfully, with all that was going on getting to the hospital I forgot it. Didn't seem to matter - everything went fine without it.

After I had lost some weight after surgery, I took the machine back to my Sleep Center and they reevaluated my sleep pattern - they took the oxygen away altogether and reduced the pressure on my machine from 18 to 11. I'll go back in a few months (and a few more pounds off) and have them take another look at my pattern - hopefully I'll be able to be done with it.
(But I must agree that I really sleep well using the machine. I didn't snore but would stop breathing often during the night. Now I put the mask on, turn on the machine and humidifier and am sound asleep in 3 minutes or so.)
You may want to see how your doctor wants you to handle it before you just stop using it.
Good luck to you!

And I meant to mention, they just download the computer card in the machine - another Sleep Study is not needed.

I too love my CPAP and and can't sleep without it. If I ever stop needing it, I will probably still use it.

As for taking it to the hospital, my doctors told me "No CPAP, no surgery".

hi i had a sleep study did not have sleep apnea but that stuff they put in your hair is nasty i think it's gel. it doesn't hurt your approval it can actually help because weight loss can help improve or cause it to go away.
