City: Phoenix State: Arizona | Going in for surgery Wed. 11th! Have a question??? Hey, everyone
I'm getting banded this Wednesday! I'm so nervous.
I've been reading peoples posts that have a similar amount of weight to lose and I am starting to get discouraged.
It seems like the less you have to lose, the longer it takes to come off.
Does anyone know if this can be overcome by exercise.
I would love to be at or near goal weight by Oct. 25 for my 6 year anniversary.
Thanks for everyone that responds,
Jillian

| Weight Loss Will Come
I had my surgery on 5/12/2008, and my first folow-up visit was 2 and a half weeks later. I had lost an amazing 21lbs!!! I was 100 pounds overweight, and can already feel my goal weight is possible. I started on the treadmill 8 days ago, and haven't weighed in yet, but I'm sure I've dropped some more. Stick with the guidelines and it WILL happen! Lots of luck. |

Wow...unless you're having triplets :biggrin2: 80 pounds in 4 months isn't smart or easy. That's .75 pounds a DAY. 2625 excess calories to burn every day? That's like 5 hours in spin class or 8 hours doing laps...every day.
Discouraged? Sure, if you set goals that no normal humans can reach, that's bound to happen.
It would be perfectly reasonable to 30 pounds by your Anniversary and goal by Easter though! Quote:

I have to agree. I have lost much quicker than I expected so far with a very careful diet and exercise, but I don't think you can safely lose 80 pounds in 4 months.
Don't be discouraged...this is a very positive, life changing experience!

It would be perfectly reasonable to 30 pounds by your Anniversary and goal by Easter though! | Wow... What a civil response. Although I'm sure aarial appreciates your attempt at mapping her road to failure with math you might want to open a calendar before making any calculations. What you've done here is taken the very basic approach of counting the number of months between surgery and her anniversary, multiplying by 4 (because there's only 4 weeks in every month right?), and multiplying that by 7. And in doing so you've artificially inflated the numbers for no other reason than to shoot down her goal. So let's pick it apart shall we? Quote: |
Originally Posted by Phoenix That's .75 pounds a DAY. | ERRR - wrong. Using the handy calendar (located in the bottom right of most PCs running Windows) we need to count the number of weeks and remainder of days between and including June 11th and October 25th. When doing this we come to the understanding that there's 19 weeks and 3 days in our time line - not 16 weeks and 0 days. This brings our pound per day loss requirement to .59 (rounded up from .588) which is a 21.4% lb-a-day loss requirement reduction from your inflated numbers. Quote: |
Originally Posted by Phoenix 2625 excess calories to burn every day? | Since you like asking your self questions I will answer this one for you: No. It's 2065 calories a day. This sounds like a lot at first until you actually think about it. Using conventional knowledge we know the average person is recommended to eat 2,000 calories a day to maintain they're current weight. This means any reduction in caloric intake results in some kind of weight loss. If after she is banded she limits her self to 1,200 calories a day then we're down to a required total of 865 excess calories burned. Using the Calories Burned Chart @ Calories Burned Chart By Activity as a generic/conservative guideline we can calculate that a 200lb (she's 245) person walking 1.5 hours a day burns 420 calories. And we're left 445 to burn - which I will consider easily burned by very physical nature of her work which she spends 8 to 9 hours a day doing 5 days a week.
I will now proceed with my own self-interview. Is this post exact science? No, but it's certainly more accurate than the doomsday scenario you painted in your response. So what is our lesson? Before you suggest someone is dumb you should probably make sure your own logic is in order.
If I sounded pompous and abrasive in this response it's because I meant to.

| Aarial, I think if you eat around 1000-1200 a day, (healthy foods), & excersize moderately 3-5 days a week you could certainly come very close to goal. I have lost about 7 lbs in the past 4 days. Keep in mind I am on my pre op clear liquid diet though. And I consume about 80 grams of protein from my protein shakes. I have been taking many vitamin supplements & drinking at least 8 glasses of water most days. But I can only keep doing this for another 5 weeks or so. When I am 4 weeks post op I will start on mushy foods for a while, 2 weeks I am guessing & then to soft solids for a bit & then regular. So if you eat close to that regimen & drink your water & take your vitamins & excersize, YES I think you will come darn close!!!! Of course this is only my oppinion & we all have one. If you want a list of my supplements send me a private message. You could run them by your Dr. to see what he/she says. Best wishes to you. P.S. I am having my surgery 3 days before my 15 year anniversary. I told him it is the best gift I could have. I hope to be down by 100 lbs for my 16 year anniversary. You Go Girl!!!!

The weight does not come off that fast. I have a friend that had the RYN in March and has not lost 80 lbs. You have to be real with your self. If you do you homework you are only suppose to lose 1 to 2 lbs a week. These people who are on their post op diet are losing fast but with the band and being able to eat it doesn't happen that fast. Set a smaller goal and work toward that. It is not a miracle it is a tool.

Cool. And on your very first post, too. You must be a hit at parties.

IMO you could get very close to goal but it would require a LOT of dicipline and hard work. You might try to take it a little easier and use your anniversary as an opportunity to set a mini-goal. That way you're not setting yourself up to fail, but still have a deadline to keep you on track.

that goal is possible, but would be unlikely. I mean I wish you all the luck in the world, but you shouldn't set such a high goal and you're going to end up working yourself to the bone and maybe causing your band to slip etc. Make a smaller goal and if you happen to be close to 80 lbs you are, but I'd make like a 30 lb goal or a little more. 80 lbs is a heck of a lot to lose in 4 months.

Nice to see such a nasty post here. And we're all here to support each other, huh?
It might be possible to lose that much weight in that amount of time, why not go for it? In my opinion (and yes we all have one, and that's why we're here, to express our opinions and share our experiences, and respect other opinions, right?) it's not likely to happen in a healthy way but who's to say.... we're all different.
My concern would be setting such a challenging goal for myself, I would tend to get pretty discouraged if I realized it wasn't going to happen. For me, I am trying to just see this as a new and healthier way to live, it's going to be for the rest of my life.... so if I can live with healthy choices, the right portion sizes, etc., the weight will come off at the right pace.
Whatever happens.... good luck! It's a very exciting journey.

City: Phoenix State: Arizona | Thanks all
I know my goal is bit over the top but I was just wondering what everyone thought.
So thanks for all the input.
I'm not stuck on losing 80lbs in 4 months I just wanted to know if this was a possibility. Even if I don't lose that much I will still be happy with losing anything.
Good luck Jeremiahsmommy I wish you all the best.
This journey will be the best thing that has ever happened to me, the prospect of wearing clothes that don't come from plus size stores and feeling healthy and confident is unfathomable.
So here goes.....Surgery is @ 10:30am tomorrow.
Thanks again everyone,
Jillian
