Deathly afraid of death!

I'm getting banded in a month or so. The more anxious and excited I get as the surgery draws near, I also notice a deep fear perpetuating about the possibility of dying on the table! I feel morbid and strange, but I can't help but worry that once I get put under I won't wake up! Did anyone else have this fear? Can anyone calm me down a bit? :help:

Yes! i have the same fear.
I'm getting the band done on Nov.26
but the doctors told me that they never had death.
so i trust them,and god!

I go in for surgery on Monday. I'm terrified. I've been having nightmares about razor blades and all kinds of gross stuff. It's not like me to be such a weinie. I saw my doctor today for pre-op. He helped a little, and he's such a doll!!! If he's the last thing I ever see, I couldn't complain!! LOL

They say public speaking is the #1 fear. Maybe do a public speech right before to get it out of your system. Even for corrective eye surgery they give a little something to relax before they rig you up to the IV. Enjoy it!

i had the same fear and started a thread on the same topic 1 mnth ago..let me re assure u all that u will be fine and will look back and laugh,, ive been banded 2 weeks now and its the best thing i have done for myself.. the surgery was easier than i thought and actually my husband was more nervous than i was on the actual day...u will all be fine,,goodluck to u all.......

SURGERY DATE: October 30th 2007
First fill -17th December 2007 - 5mls
Second Fill -31 January 2007 - 2mls

I had the same fears prior to surgery... ended up over eating for a good 6-8 weeks prior to the surgery just from the anxiety. Naturally I put on weight during that time. Anyway, I'm now 2 weeks post banding, 7 kilos (15lbs) down and feeling great... best thing I ever did.

I was so afraid of dying on the table I cancelled. Now I regret that as I would be further ahead. It is the best thing I have ever done. Down 22 lbs. and that is a miracle for me. I love having the restriction. I still eat, I still enjoy food, but the band stops me from overeating and I was eating so much before this surgery. I also have so much more energy. It has been a miracle.

I was so afraid to have the surgery done. I got everything in order, just incase I ended up dead. I have a husband and 3 sons and run the paperwork part of the finances and make sure everyone gets to their doctors appointments and takes the right meds. I left a 6 page instructional sheet for my husband, just in case. I also made sure all the the prescritptions had refills (asthma, allergy and adhd meds for the sons).

When I was sitting there in the surgery holding area I almost backed out. I told dh "maybe I shouldn't go through with this." Thankfully he's the sensible non-overly-emotional one and he said you're just nervous and you'll be fine. So I went to the bathroom about 5 times in the course of 45 minutes (being nervous makes me have to pee). I remember asking my surgeon some strange questions about whether or not the monitors they use were high definition or not, LOL. And that was it. I don't even think I was asked to count backwards. (during my wisdom tooth extraction and tonsilectomy I remember counting backwards).

Surgery is risky, but I think the procedure has a mortality rate of 1/2000, which is really minor compared to the bypass of 1/100 or 1/200. That's how I looked at it.

I was afraid to and than I started to think that if my number was up it was going to be up regardless to if I was or was not having surgery that day. Im not getting into any religious stuff but I do believe that if its your time its your time. So what Im trying to say is dont miss out on one of the best things to happen to you in your life, only to realize that it wasnt your time and now you have missed your surgery.

I'm set for Monday and am see sawing back and forth on my courage. I remember when I woke up in recovery from having shoulder surgery, I was CONVINCED I had been kidnapped and was in Canada. (I live in Texas) I demanded to know who brought me there and how I got over the border without my passport. How embarrassing. I hope I don't do THAT again......

I felt the same way, I was just banded on Monday. I can tell you that your feelings are valid. I remember Sunday night before my surgery I was a wreck. Nothing could calm me down. Try not to do that to yourself. I wish I didn't. I will tell you that when I woke up in recovery I laughed a how worked up I got. All that wasted energy.
Also, you may want to ask your Dr. for something to keep you calm.
Remember, This is a good thing!

I lay on the operating table quizing the anesthesiologist before I would let him put the mask on me. "Are you in a good mood?" "Did you aregue with your spouse this morning?" "What's my name?". When I came to in the recovery room, the nurse was laughing at me because I was counting on my fingers and reciting the alphabet (to make sure I hadn't lost any brain cells). I told her to tell my husband that I loved him. They went out to the waiting room and told him and he said "Oh my god, she has brain damage." :o)

You'll be just fine. Do whatever it takes to help you cope.

It's funny how we all had the same fear prior to the surgery, yet when you think about it, we were slowly killing ourselves with the extra weight, BP, diabetes, sleep apnea etc. I even told my sister that yes I know the weight could kill me in the end but having the op could kill me there and then. Crazy thoughts !!

Well as I said earlier, I did it with no real problems and now down 7.5 kilos (16.5lbs) and looking forward to finally having a normal healthy body.

Funny for me. I've had seven surgeries (3 c-sections, 1 hernia repair, 2 knee surgeries, and a gall bladder removal). Never, ever entered my mind that I could die. But for some reason, this one is really getting to me. Maybe because I think of it as elective surgery ? I don't know. If I dBut I'm worried about it, too. I wish it was over already. Trying to stay positive, but I think, "what would keep me from being that 1 in 1,000? Somebody has to be that 1, right?" Trying to stop those thoughts.
