Banded 9/17/07 - Very thirsty..Help!

:help:I was banded 9/17/07 and am going on my fourth day now. I was told to drink lots of fluids for my first two weeks, but I have not been able to hold anything down. My doctor mentioned that if my chest hurts, then I'm drinking too much too quickly. I have constantly been vomiting since the day of my surgery. Since the surgery, I have had very thick saliva and spit continuoesly. If I swallow it, after about an hour or so, I end up vomitting all of the thick saliva. Is this normal not to be able to swallow any fluid for the first few days? Please let me know if any one out there is or experienced this. I am not in any pain, but was given liquid loritab. I tried taking it, but threw it out in less than a minute. I have managed to keep a teaspoon of water down for a period or so. Is a teaspoon every half hour common for the first few days after surgery? Or should I be able to drink more fluid? Any info or advice would help tremendously. I miss being able to drink/gulp ice water so much! I remeber the times I threw out ice water into my sink and now think that I wish I had drank it. Please tell me it'll get better. I've even thought of going to the ER and having them pull this band out of me!

Call your surgeons office RIGHT NOW. There should be someone on call at all times. They should have given you paperwork at your discharge that explains how to get ahold of them. I'm amazed you've put up with the vomiting for two days. I'd have called after a few hours. Do not do anything else in the next ten minutes, go pick up the phone and call right away!!!!

If you have slipped, it can be fixed right away. It happens at times, and if you truly haven't kept more than a teasponnful of fluid down in a couple days, you likely need IV fluids to get rehydrated. Please don't get frustrated and say yank it out, you've just had a setback, setbacks can be dealt with.

I was banded on Wednesday and haven't thrown up one time. I had one or two slight waves of nausea in recovery but that passed quickly and I still haven't thrown up. I have really worried about throwing up and band slippage. I am drinking small amounts at a time, like 3 ounces in 15 to 30 minutes. I feel pretty great to be honest I feel so blessed. Good Luck!!

And no, you should absolutely NOT be gulping any fluid. so soon post-op many surgeons advise you should be drinking from a tablespoon to about an ounce every fifteen minutes.

I was also banded on the 17th. I think that i have been very lucky so far. I have had a little nausea, but have been able to keep everything down. I am very sore around the incisions and have not slept well, but overall am doing great. sure hope you feel better soon!!

I was told to sip from a small medicine cup and it should take about 4 little sips to finish the cup. I'd call my doc. Hope it gets better!

Hello all. Thanks for your replies. At the time I wrote the initial "thread", I was waiting on a call back from my doctor. I got that call and was told to go to the nearest ER and have IV fluids given to me. I did that and was released this morning. I will be going to see my doctor (250 miles away) on Monday and will ask him to do something "quickly" to allow me to pass fluids through my band or to remove it. I will also ask to be placed in the hospital until I am passing fluids. I'm doing well with the IV fluid, but I'm sure I will be dehydrated again come monday/tuesday. By that time I will have visited my doctor whether he knows it or not. It will be an unscheduled visit due to the weekend! Will update later and thanks again.

Jar, Did your Dr. fill your Band after he put it in? It sounds almost is if you have to much fill in your band. I hope you get to feeling better SOON!!!

<p>Hello all again. I visited my doctor this weekend and was in the hospital until yesterday. He was determined that my band would open up and said to trust him. I mentioned to him that I would need to go back to work on this coming Monday, so if he needed to re-operate on me, I would need some days to recover. He mentioned that if the band did not open by Thursday (tomorrow), that he would change out my band to a larger one. However, he said that he was sure that he would not have to operate and that I would be fine by no later than today. Well, he was right! I'm doing much better and passing fluids just fine. At first I regretted making this decision, but now that everything is working as planned, I'm looking so forward to my new lifestyle. My doctor's expanation was that it was a combination of swelling, a small band, and fat tissue where the band was placed. His choice for using the small band was becuase his experince with the larger band was that they were more proned to slip than the smaller band. I'm not sure how much I weigh today, but I weighed 403lbs when I got banded (09/17/07).</p>
