exercise for those with knee problems

Hello everyone, my mother has a really bad knee which is headed in the direction of a total knee replacement. She was banded October 19th and is doing pretty well and has lost around 15-20lbs, but she is constantly battling pain and swelling of her knee. She wants to exercise and speed up the weightloss, but doctor says she can't walk. Does anyone have any suggestions on what type of exercise she can do and not be hard on her knee.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

I have really bad legs. So far I have had about 13 operations and need more. My legs are full of plates, screws and rods. So I have similar issues. I use a recumbent stationary bike and do pilates. I can't walk, run or dance - all things I used to do. If I have physical therapy I also do a recumbent stepper but those aren't really available for consumer purchase unless you have several thousand dollars to buy one.

I have had bilateral knee replacement, and water therapy is the best ever. THe water is about 90 degrees, you can do things in water that you wouldn't even think of on land. Becky
