Good restriction is ....

Being able to eat only 1/4 cup of food and not being able to eat bread.

Crap!

This one is driving me crazy.

I think good restriction is about eating well, not overeating and being able to manage your appetite and your intake whilst still losing weight. If that means you can eat 1 and a half cups of food at a time and have the occasional piece of toast, then that's great.

Good restriction is different for everyone. You cant say that you only have good restriction when you can only fit in 1/4 cup.

The point of a lap band isnt to starve yourself thin and live a life of punishment, surely?

I'm so sick of blanket statements about these things making inexperienced bandsters who are doing fine panic over eating too much or thinking they need another fill because they can eat a piece of bread.

Grrrr. I'm cranky lately!

That is great advice, I have a friend who told me something similar today. She is not depriving herself with anything. This is not to suffer but to control your weight.

You are preaching to the choir, sister! I completely agree. Right now, I can't eat much bread, but I'm quite happy with that, since I'm a bread addict. If I have a little, I want a LOT.

Good restriction for me, is when I can take home at least 2 meals worth of left overs. I get so giddy when I eat meals I ate pre-band, knowing what I ate THEN vs. what I eat NOW.

I "suffered" for awhile because I thought one did that for good restriction. (I didnt view it as suffering at the time) I pb'd if I hate to fast or the wrong thing. I couldnt eat bread, or anything glutenous. And I was always tight in the mornings. My doc took a little teeny bit of saline out after we discussed this...and I was in awe that I could have restriction and not be punished at the same time. I never got reflux or had issues..but I really thought that I was o.k....I am so glad I tell my doc the truth and we went through our decision making together....he saved me trouble in the long run...I am absolutely sure of it.

My doc DOES say it's 1/4 - 1/2 cup of food, and flatly states that that bread and most pastas are things of the past. Seems to work for me, and the before and during photos don't lie.

Mine doesnt - so is one of them wrong? I dont think so, I think it just shows that there's more than one way to skin a cat.

I dont think my before and afters lie either by the way - and I ate bread and pasta the whole way through. And more than 1/4 of a cup too.

Its not "wrong" to eat 1/4 to 1/2 of a cup, its just not necessary for everyone.

And lap band surgeons are surgeons - they are not necessarily that in the know when it comes to what to eat for weight loss - they have opinions is all.

There is no way that someone could eat only 1/4 cup of food 3 x a day and get anywhere near the nutrients they need. I am glad that I can not eat bread often because I don't need a lot of carbs and prefer to get them from veggies. I would find it depressing to eat only a few bites of food at a meal and that is all that 1/4 cup is.

I am really sick of a lot of the things I read on here, not only the 1/4 c of food posts. I am sorry to hijack your post Jacqui. I read so many stupid things on some of the posts that it's getting harder for me to log onto LBT. This used to be my favorite part of the day, getting to read all the posts.

I usually go to new posts but lately I am so frustrated when I read the new posts, I am trying to find a way to still come to LBT
without pulling out my hair. (I've lost enough hair already!)

Maybe I should just come to R& R and give up on all the rest. I feel bad, because when I was new, I had questions too.

They ought to have a section that says New Bandsters Must Read, like they have one for Near Goal.

One thing to note about individuals successes is if they are exercising. I know that a "walk around the block" is a great start, but it is not the exercise I need to lose weight. I need to sweat, and sweat a lot. If I am not eating carbs and exercising, I might have lots of success...or if I am eating them and not exercising, I might have a different result.

I am a slow loser, but I am exercising and eating 1/3 of what I used to eat. I, like Laura, can usually get 3 meals out of what I used to wolf down. That is what I call restriction.

Some people think the band should be used as a torture devise to physically STOP you from eating, instead of HELPING you stop eating.
