[RANT ON]
in case anyone noticed, I haven't been online lately.....
short version: computer virus labeled "massive and multiple virus infection" so bad the tekkies had to install a new hard drive, as they couldn't eliminate or even identify the specific virus...it was so complex, even after all the hours they spent on my CPU, they only charged for ONE hour service....
The tekkie labeled my old drive "POISON" and 'very bad'....you take home and destroy'.....
So for $195 I got a new 60 gig hard drive, new Norton anti virus, a new battery CMOS, a couple other specific tekkie things....felt they did a good job considering.....

Virii are one of the most annoying computer issues. Especially if you know you are careful and you keep your machine up to date and you don't go clicking on random things and you STILL get one.
Welcome back!

I've encountered problems while using both Norton and McAffee. Neither has my trust. I've had the best luck with Avast! -- and it's free, to boot.

| Avast! antivirus
It talks to you. :) If I forget to turn off my speakers when I leave my computer, I'll be downstairs cleaning or trying to go to sleep and hear, "Virus database has been updated."

I think that people that sit around creating viruses just because they can should be shot. They don't even get anything out of it except the satisfaction of pissing people off, and costing consumers gazillions of dollars on software and hardware.
JERKS!

Avast antivirus works on Vista. I've been on vista over a year. If it has a way to auto scan your pc, I haven't figure it out yet, so you do need to remember to actually do the scans when it tells you that the Virus Database Has Been Updated, lol.

I am anti norton and mcafee as well, they're not very reliable and bog down your computer.
I've never heard of Avast, but the anti-virus me and computer geeky hubby stand by is Kaspersky.
It's not free, but you can download it from their website and buy a year code.
Also some free programs worth having on your computer if you surf the web.. Spyboy Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware.. and some other programs I don't know if they're free or if we just had samples of it.. TrojanHunter (I believe they let you use for a trial period, so if you think you have viruses, best to check out), Spysweeper, Pest Patrol.. and Ewido.
When we use to clean computers, we had to run all of these programs, and even after each search, the next would find tons the others missed. It's a shame they can't bundle all these programs!
