You can go to the postoffice and get a pre-weight, then have users calculate it based on their zip code. You can charge a flat rate, so you say "shipping is $8" and whether it's $3 or $6 they pay $8. You can use flat rate shipping, so say a box costs $8 to ship no matter how much is in it.
I don't have time to go to the postoffice every time so I generally guess what it will cost me, and charge a flat rate. Sometimes I get more than it actually costs, but that's ok - by the time I get a box, packing materials, etc. it breaks even.
