Haven't seen Glengarry nor torch song. I'd be hard-pressed to list my 10 favorites - unless it was by genre. That sounds like it could be fun! Of course, the more movies I watch, the more they may change! |

Sorry, I haven't read all the threads here but want to share my latest video reviews since my vacation.
We saw two DVDs, both with subtitles.
The first one was "Mongol, The Rise of Ghenghis Khan". That was a pretty cool flick and one I think most guys who like a bit of blood splatter would appreciate. It's like mixing "Braveheart" with "300". He was a cute little boy and had a tough life and if you like foreign films and historical pieces you might like it. I give it 4 stars.
The second one was called "JCVD" It wasn't a Roman flick but a semi biographical film staring and about Jean Claude Van Damme and is in French with subtitles. Now if you were raised in a martial arts family like I was and also found JCVD kind of foxy in the early 90s you'd probalby like this film (although no JCVD butt is shown). Actually if you're a JCVD fan you're more likely to feel compelled to see but it is different than his typical flicks and doesn't have to make up an excuse as to why he has a French accent because it's about his life. It actually got good reviews and if you've followed his career from "Bloodsport" and "Kickboxer" to all the films that were only released on video you just have to see it. I did feel a bit left hanging in the end though. I give it 3 stars if you like JCVD.

Where are all the movie buffs? Since Saturday (using my 1-5 rating scale):
Possessed (old B&W) - 3 (pretty daring for its time; chick flick)
Thick as Thieves - 2 (are there any new movie ideas any more?)
What just happened? - 1.5 (expected more from Mr. Deniro)
Grand Hotel (Old B&W) - 4
The Ghost and Mrs Muir (another moldie oldie) - 2
the hand that Rocks the Cradle - 2 |

I haven't had the time yet to watch any movies. I've been watching a recorded movie from Hallmark Channel thats been on my DVR since early January.
I'm watching while I"m on my stationery bike, so about 30 mins each day I'm on it - and this movie is three hours long. The movie is called "5 People You Meet in Heaven" based on the book. I'll give a review when I'm done.
I still haven't watched Roadhouse yet.

Even if it is just for eye candy---ya gotta leave the volume up so you can hear Sam Elliot!!! Everyone sees movies so differently! Last year, there was a group of us who met up at Fuddruckers in the mall and had dinner and while there the fact that There Will Be Blood was showing. Since most of our group has connections to the oilfield in one way or another, and this was touted as an epic saga from the discovery of the drilling of oil or something along that line----we all left, and hit the movie. There were 4 couples, and 3 singles. And some loved it! One couple left midway totally bored, others complained non stop following it. Personally I was nonplussed with it. I was of the crowd that the popcorn was better than the movie. DH kept thinking he got different messages out of it regarding greed. One of the couples we went with, recently ask me if it had come out on DVD yet. I realized I didn't care, I wouldn't watch it again. I will likely listen to it again, as I do something else, DH will probably buy it! I feel the same when I read what others thought of some of these movies!!! Just goes to show you cannot trust reviews, we all like different things!!

Absolutely Kat! That's what makes it entertaining! DH and I usually agree, but when we disagree, it's worthy of discussion for at least 2 or three nights! For example, he hates Betty Davis - now really, how can anyone hate her acting abilities???!!! I on the other hand could happily live the rest of my life without watching any kind of western...they aren't movies, they're cartoons! For some reason, DH doesn't agree!
For the record - There will be blood was a 2 for us. Couldn't get what the hype/buzz was all about, but as something to watch while painting your toenails, or doing sewing, or instead of scrubbing the toilet, it was ok. |

Ok, some more quickie reviews:
Watchmen -- great if you are a fan of the graphic novel. If you're not, and expecting a Batman flick, you're going to be confused and disappointed. If you accept it at face value, it's a complex dissertation on human nature and group dynamics. I liked it quite a bit.
The Wrestler -- bleak view of an aging ex-superstar. It's very much "Glory Days" by Springsteen in feel. Roarke plays the role well. NOT a feel-good flick, but worth a rental maybe.
The Reader -- Really hard to watch, but worth watching. Interesting look into post-war German psyche and culture.
Into the Wild (DVD) -- Supposedly a journey of life and discovery, but really it follows the path of a dumbass as he wanders unprepared into the Alaskan winter and gets what he truly deserves. Well photographed and acted, but it's hard to feel sympathy for the guy.

Adding it to my list of "Movies I'll see when I have time."

So I watched Chihuahua that dog movie and was just silly. I knew it would be ridiculous, but I wanted a light movie.
My all time scary movie is The Exorcists. OMG, that movie still creeps me out. My favorite part is the new DVD, which has her crawling down the stairs backwards. Play that in slow motion and it just way to dang funny, but creepy!

I cruised past "Eyes Wide Shut" on HBO the other night. I think it was one of the worst movies ever (again, I'm tempted to read the book, just to see if the content or the adaptation sucked). The wife and I saw it in the theaters when it came out......when the lights came up, it was dead quiet, and then one lone voice said "What the hell was that?"
I think that voice said it all. |

Oh, and I love all types of movies, Roadhouse notwithstanding. I love old movies too.......but I prefer either the comidies of the 50's / 60's or more "noir" films. I saw Kiss Me Deadly this weekend and it was interesting. |

Last night: Memento...2
We've watched a string of 2's recently; gotta get some good movies lined up for the weekend. And of course a mixture of golden-oldies and new... |

I didn't even KNOW there was a Memento 2! (Adding to list...)
DH and I are in the process of *trying* to sell home and purchase a new one, so my movie days are slowing down.
Although, I do want to see Escape to Witch Mountain this weekend with DD. |
