Hysterectomy, anyone?

I put off a recommended partial hysterectomy due to being banded the same month ( I had no medical emergency - just heavy / prolonged periods w/endometriosis ) . I wanted to see how my body would react to some weightloss & now my Dr is suggesting an Endometrial Ablation.
Not sure your problems, my only experience is my good friend who had only her ovaries removed (cancer) - and she's not experienced ANY lack of O issues. She's 48 / fairly healthy & a newlywed of 4 months - if I hear anymore of the honeymoon, I'll puke.

Thanks for the info, luluc. I do NOT have any serious issues, just heavy cramping, clotting, and increasingly shorter periods (24-26 days between each) with long durations (7 days). I am now bleeding about 1/4 of the time. Along with the cramping and clotting, I'm just ready to be done.

My dh and I have been married for 15 years this August and are still on our honeymoon

. Would love to not have to deal with birth control anymore as well!

i do not have an opinion, but i am interested to see what everyone reports. my ob/gyn recommends for me to "hurry up" and finish having babies and have a hyster...seems drastic at 25.

This thread caught my eye because I'm going through just the opposite right now, 4 have doctors have recommended that I have a hysterectomy for my large fibroid tumor and I finally found a wonderful and skilled Dr. (#5) who will be performing a myomectomy on me, which is what I wanted all along.

This is however, a very personal choice and the important thing is that you are comfortable with your own decision and that you are not pushed into it by anyone else (the way I felt I was being).

Bandster1007, your comment about what your Dr. told you concerns me a bit, though.

Do you have a medical condition that has prompted your Dr. to advise having a hysterectomy ASAP after having children? Without knowing the full details, this seems really strange to me..........

I have never had any problems post-hysterectomy - with arousal or orgasm! And of course because the issue of pregnancy had been permanently removed, there was more spontaneity, fun, and frequency! Two years later this is still true.

frangi, i have pcos, horrible horrible horrible pms, absolutely no regularity with my periods. and the funny thing is, i have been pregnant twice, and i lost this last one, this past month, but each time that i have gotten pregnant, i was NOT having periods. with my first, i had not had a period in a year and got pregnant, with this last one, i had not had a period in 3 months when i got pregnant. apparantely when i ovulate, i don't menstruate. i dunno it's weird. i do not have the major side of pcos like some people do, but i have the hair problems, the dry skin, the acne, the dandruff, the thinning of head hair, so my doc said....ovaries need to go. i'm not paying him any attention though. (i also have sever migraines the week leading up to and of my period).

Hi Bandster 1007,

I'm so sorry to hear about all you have been going through lately.

There are some excellent GYN specialists out there, and maybe you will want to consider talking to one, as it sounds to me like you have some fairly complicated issues.

I second this whole heartedly! Now, my hysterectomy was done as a partial treatment, I had uterine cancer, and had a complete hysterectomy. My ovaries could not be saved, but I had been tossed into early menopause due to the severity of the endometriosis----so I did not have issue with the withdrawal of hormones, it had already been happening.

If I had to choose it would be really hard which surgery I am most thankful for, my band or my hysterectomy.....I am thankful for both.

Since my hysto, was done for the Dx, it was abdominally, with a hip to hip incision with an additional 5" upwards towards the belly button. I was in the hospital for 3 days, had issues getting up and around for awhile, I was extremely sore, but had been through quite a bit more, than the average hysterectomy----mine lasted over 8 hours!!! LOL But within a week or so, was walking easy, and by the end of my 6 weeks limitations time, I was climbing the walls!

Sexually is has not been any sort of deterrant. There are occasional times we will have to use some sort of KY or similar product, but not often.

I would knock people down getting to the front of the line to do it again----just like my band, I wish I had done it long before----if I had the cancer would likely have only been a bad dream!!!

And now my TT will eliminate my faint scars!!!!

I am scheduled to have a hysterectomy on 8/11/08 (vaginal). Does anyone know if I will have to have my band unfilled in order to have anesthesia? I have called my doctor and I'm waiting to hear back from him.

Doubt it unless you have a history of nausea from anesthesia. I've gone under 3x since banding and never changed my fill.

I'm relieved to hear that. I didn't have any problems with the anesthesia from the LAP-BAND^® surgery (they gave me anti-nausea medicine before and after surgery).

My hysterectomy was the best thing I ever did. I kept my ovaries. I was 34 at the time.

I was in the hospital for 3 days total and on Tylenol when I came home. I walked everyday (in the beginning it was just to the corner and back). I was back in college full-time that summer (3 weeks post-op) and took an overload of classes since I was off work.

Healed great and have never regretted it once.

I had a vaginal hysterectomy back in 2004, before I was banded, so I cannot respond to that. However, I had my gallbladder out this past April and I requested a complete unfill prior to surgery because I have had big issues with anesthesia and vomiting. Didn't need to have the unfill after all, no vomiting this time. My surgeon told me that anesthesia is fat soluable (or did he say absorbable?) and because I have alot less fat I wouldn't have absorbed as much into my system, so that's probably why I didn't have issues with vomitting. Anyway, I had my gallbladder removed on Thursday and went back to get filled on Friday and was all set.
