I have a hernia, will it get larger from the surgery

I just had a consult with the Dr who will do my surgery. He told me right away that I have a hernia at a large scar from a old gall bladder surgery. He said the surgery can be done but it will be more difficult. After I lose weight I will need more surgery. I was so shocked( I thought it was just fat) that I didn't ask this question. Will filling my stomach with gas for the operation cause more damage to the hernia? I've been reading a lot of posts but haven't came across this. He said he couldn't do both at the same time.

I wonder why he can't take care of it while he is in there, did he say? I have a slight hiatal hernia and although I haven't discussed this with my surgeon yet, the technician who found it during the barium swallow said that if necessary the doctor will probably take care of it while he's in there. In my initial consult, the surgeon mentioned that my gall bladder would be checked prior to surgery and any issues could be taken care during the surgery so I know that they can handle other issues while you are there...
