| If I have to go through it, what is entailed in a sleep apnea study ?
Some studies are done in one night and some require two. It depends on the MD ordering the test. You will go to a sleep center and the technician will attach a bunch of little leads to your head, face, and neck area. They will also attach a probe to your finger or ear which measures the percentages of oxygen (pulse oximetry) as well as periods of time when you stop breathing for a few seconds or more (apnea). While you’re asleep, the leads record the sleep cycles. Some people have no disturbances and require no treatment. Some people have drops in their oxygen levels and frequent episodes of pauses (apnea) in their breathing. This prevents a person from experiencing deep sleep and results in constant fatigue. If your test reveals that you have sleep apnea requiring treatment, your MD will prescribe a C-PAP mask. - C-PAP: This stands for continuous positive airway pressure. A combination of air pressure and oxygen is forced into the lungs to maintain oxygen levels and prevent apnea. The therapy is delivered via a small machine that is attached to a nasal or mouth mask fitted around the head. The goal is to achieve a normal sleep/wake pattern. Once the appropriate settings are determined, you are monitored while asleep to make sure the therapy is effective. If it is not, an alternative therapy will be discussed with you by the pulmonologist.
