Maybe. You’ll need to check with your surgeon. Some surgeons want a colonoscopy and some want an endoscopy and some want a small bowel series.
- Colonoscopy: This test examines the large intestine and is done with an endoscope via the rectum. You will be required to do a bowel prep for this test. Follow the directions given to you. Sedation is given (via an IV) for this test so you’ll be required to have someone to drive you home. The test itself takes less than 20 minutes on average.
- Small Bowel Series: This test examines the small bowel and is done with barium and x-ray visualization. You will be advised as to when to stop eating the day before the test. On the day of the test you will be given a flavored barium drink. After a period of time, you will go into the x-ray room and have films done of the small intestine. No sedation is required. The length of the test depends on how fast the barium moves through your intestines and can take up to 2 hours.
- Endoscopy (EGD): This test examines the mouth, throat, pharynx, esophagus, and stomach via an endoscope that is inserted into the mouth. You will be instructed to have nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before the test. Sedation is given via the IV and you’ll be required to have someone drive you home. The test itself takes less than 10 minutes.
