Hi OLGI330
I see you just went to Dr. Rumbout. I am going April 1. How was it? Any tips on the flight back or I would love to hear from a fellow patient of your experience.

I was very happy w/the experience. My mom who is also a nurse was also pleasantly surprised at how well-organized everything was. every person involved was informative & willing to listen, the nutritionist took her time explaining everything clearly. PLEASE Take the nasty-tasing pain medecine they give you. I put it off and regretted it later. For the flight back carry your liquid antibiotic in your ziploc baggie and the script you get in the surgeon's office so as airport personel are rummaging through your carry-on luggage they don't force you to leave it behind because of these liquid restrictions we have now. The guy who checked my bag even let me carry in my yogurt drink that was 6 ounces and not in a baggie when I told him I had surgery w/strict dietary restrictions and could not consume any of the snacks given to me in the flight. I've been told I was very lucky with that one. Enjoy, sight see but not too much, like I did, you'll pay for it later.

I wanted to let you and everyone eles know what the result was when I called the weight loss surgury center in missauga, ont. I was told I must have a consult with the surgeon, cost $200.
then I was told "if" he takes me on it would cost $5,000 for all fills and any aftercare. WHAT!!!!!! I said "oh, so your punishing pepole who go out of canada to get their surgury done" she said"well no, not really"
I mean can you even believe that!! I told her I'd rather do it myself, thanks (I really don't want to do it myself) So now I'm still looking for any where in Ontario. Anyone have any other suggestions?

I just found a surgeon's office to do my fills. But I did get the "Whe have a policy of not providing fills for anyone who got their band out of the country" TWICE. It really is a punishment, not fair...

I recently found a doctor in my area to do fills and aftercare. I'd been told by another office that "as a rule they don't take patients who were banded out of the country, but they'll review my medical record to be sure". I said no thanks. I have an appointment at my new doctor's office, and when I asked if the accept patients who were banded in Mexico she didn't even hesitate when she said yes.

It seems to me that the Mexican clinics that are banding you and taking your money should be setting you up with aftercare back in your area. It's really not up to Canadian clinics to do the work for them.
What I want to know is what is the warranty at the Mexican clinics? Do they supply lifetime warranty on replacements or any problems like SWLC and TLBC?
I have been banded 2 years next month and also had weight loss surgery 21 years ago and as a veteran I would never chance being done at a foreign clinic. It is just too far away if there are complications and believe me there can be. Yes emergency rooms have to see you but I know lots of out of country wls patients from bandsters, Dsers and Gastric bypass and nobody ever wants to touch them when they go to the hospitals. I paid $16,000 for my revision and as a stay at home mom it was a lot of money but worth every damn penny.
Many reputable Mexican surgeons, DO require you to have aftercare plans. My surgeon offered lifetime fills through him, in Mexico, when he knew I was not feeling that would be feasible, he spoke with a more local surgeon who I was planning on using to do my fills---and he thought he too was too far away. I am in a rural area of New Mexico, and there are no band surgeons here--so the closest at the time was 6 hours away. The MX surgeon thought that still too much of a distance, and had me make plans with a local Dr, for emergency care. I made an appointment, at my own expense (although they ended up not charging for the appointment---I was prepared to pay it out of pocket) with my former oncologist, since his office was used to accessing ports. He agreed, and spoke with the surgeons involved. All of this was set up prior to a surgery date being set, prior to a single penny being paid.
There used to be a Dr., a surgeon doing lap bands out of Albuquerquw NM---which is 3.5 hours, but would have been closer--but he had his license removed----for malpractice reasons, as well as insurance fraud---from what I understood.....and he was inside the US of A. It is OUR body they are opening up and working on--it is OUR responsibilty to make an educated decision regarding who is doing it, and what your plans are for follow up care.
Years ago, my DH and I lived out of the US for work purposes----I would not have had an option if I had required surgery ---such as appendix, or gall bladder, back then. We do not all live or have access to the few big WLS centers. I can only wish!!!
