No sleeping on your side the first week after.

I went to my doctor today and he told me that I was not supposed to sleep on my side the first week after LAP-BAND® surgery.

My doctor uses mesh to cover the port to help the tissue grow over it and if you sleep on your side both you and your port are slanted and the port might become tilted.

If your doctor uses mesh to cover the port site, you are NOT supposed to sleep on your side for the first week.

No one mentioned that to me in my doctor's office, so I wanted to pass this on to everyone who will soon be banded.

Lot of good that info does for me on day 6 of my first week, but hopefully I can let other people know!

Terri

My doctor or nurse practitioner didn't mention anything to me about not sleeping on my side. I'll ask about it when I go in for my one month visit. I believe I mentioned that I slept on my non port side at the one week follow up visit thought. I was only able to sleep on my back for three days and the non port side one the 4th day. Thanks for the info!

Me too! I only sleep on my side - I was shocked and not just a little annoyed that I wasn't told by my dr!

Ladies (and gentleman) might I suggest before you get up in arms you realize each doctor does things differently. I specifically asked my doctor about sleeping on my side or stomach after surgery. He told me there shouldn't be a problem with it as long as I was comfortable with it.

Each doctor is different, bare that in mind before you get angry at your doctor for not telling you not to sleep on your side or your stomach.

My doctor had no such restriction. In fact, I was comfortable sleeping on either side the night of my surgery. It hurt a little getting into position, however. I was sleeping on my stomach six days out. I do have the Realize Band and there is very little port pain, which may have something to do with that.

I agree with PIX...your surgeon will be sure to tell you this..if it applies to you. It's great to get "heads-up" on things, but keep in mind, how it's said can scare some when not needed.

Hi all -

Didn't mean to scare anyone or get anybody "up in arms", just passing on information that my doctor told me during my post op check up.

Obviously, by looking at everybody's entries it is apparent that all of our doctors do things differently. But, isn't that what this site is for - the sharing of information?

My doctor happens to use mesh to cover the area where the port is attached, if your happens to use mesh, then this might apply. I passed on the info because it is better to be safe than sorry!

Sorry - didn't mean to offend or cause any hysteria!

Terri

oh no I would rather be safe than sorry.. and I talked to my Dr. this afternoon and he said that i should have no problems sleeping how ever i want to sleep, and he said that he put 4 stitches where the port is and he said that i would have to do some heavy lifting or strenious pulling or something in order for it to flip.. and he said that he has only had 2 maybe 3 people to have their ports to flip. But I do appreciate the info... that's why I luv this site because it reminds me to ask questions that i may have forgot to ask..

Oh I didn't mean to make you think twice hun. I was just trying to calm down some of the ladies who were getting themselfs worked up into a dither about not being told not to sleep on there sides.

I am glad you said something about it! It is good to know what some doctors do/say compared to others. So please don't hold back on information, not at all.
