Hi Rachelle, What exactly are you nervous about? Pain? Complications? Just the whole hospital thing?

What helped me with the nervousness was to consider how many people are having this done, and all the success they are experiencing. Keep reading the fourms. If so many people are doing this and having positive outcomes, then you can believe that you will do well too.

Rachelle, All the jitters are very normal. I was banded on June 7. I had been thinking of doing this for over a year and finally decided to take the plunge in January 07. Over the 7 mths it was an emotional roller coaster, however like someone else said, think of all those that have been successfull and the surgery and process went well. I compared the level of surgery with my tubal ligation and other small surgical proceedures. My dh continued to be worried which I had to block out.

Keep reading posts especially the ones that are close to your month of surgery, like if you get a date of october, read September bandsters. It will help you prepare yourself!! it helped me this way!

Good Luck!!and welcome!

Hi Rachelle,
I was banded 48 hours ago! I am home and doing great. I had my surgery at Hershey Medical Center in PA by Dr. Shope. I was also anxious about the surgery and everthing that goes along with it but I asked my doctor alot of questions, did all the pre-testing for clearance and also met with anesthesia ahead of time. These professionals made me feel very comfortable, confident and positive. Keeping a positive attitude really helps!!
I have minimal discomfort(not pain) but I am still taking the pain meds at least once during the day and to help me sleep more restfully at night. The most tender part is where the port is and that area only hurts when I get up and down. If I'm just sitting or walking (slowly!) I wouldn't even know I had it done. I've had very little in the way of gas pain...some under my ribs and a little in my shoulder but not anything unbearable and I havn't had to take anything for that.
I know everyone is different but I've had a good experience and so could you!
It's normal to be nervous but this site will give you lot's of good advice and encouragement.
Best of luck to you..

Debbie

Hi Rachelle, I had my surgery on thurs. 7-19. It's normal to be nervous about going through surgery. I take a mild sedative before going to the dentist for anything, so as you can imagine the thought of surgery was quite frightening to me. I just kept telling myself that my surgeon has done many lapbands, and other than the IV insertion, I would be asleep for the rest of the procedure. I was surprised on the day of surgery that I was really not that nervous. I got a litter teary saying goodbye to my children, but I felt that there was no turning back now, and I did not want to turn back I wanted to go for it. Good luck and I know you will be fine.

Hi Rachelle-
I was very nervous and scared myself before my surgery. But as it turned out it was the easiest surgery I have gone through. I had my gallbladder removed last September and that was painful and took me some time to recover.

I was up walking soon after I woke up from the anesthesia. I think the biggest difference with this surgery was that I came home with a pump that continuosly gives you pain medication 48hrs post op. I was off from work 7 days and have 3 small children to care for at home - life at home never slowed down.

I did have to go back to surgery almost a month after the band placement because my port moved. I went in for my first fill 2wks post op and my surgeon could not access the port. He sent me to a radiologist to access it under x-ray but to no avail. I had no choice but to go back under to have him revise the port and reposition it. I have to admit I was very discouraged when I found out I would need another surgery but thank God everything went ok. I had the surgery done on a Thursday and returned to work that next Monday.

Believe me I worried more than I should. Just believe and expect that everything will go fine. Good Luck to you!

Rachelle, I am very close to my banding date. I have to say, as I started my pre-op diet and pounds started falling off (8 in about 10 days, I was excited and starting eating "pre-op" earlier than they told me too!) I noticed how good each pound off feels! While studying whether to do this or not (self-pay also) I became more and more ready. You will know when you are ready. Today my husband had to attend to some business, so rather than go to church the rest of us slept in. I woke to discover that he had stopped for a box of donuts (he's thin) for the kids. I had the opportunity to discuss with myself - in advance of surgery- the fact that I was truly choosing not to eat donuts anymore! When I was thin I didn't really eat them either. The cost of not having a donut is VERY worth my health!! It was actually fun NOT TO EAT the donut. You will get there. Keep reading, go to seminars, ask questions and you will most likely be completely ready sooner than you think! C

Hang in there. I'm still doing the insurance thing, still waiting. I am also nervous and have panic attacks. But I know the end result will be worth everything we are going through now.
Take Care
