Spirometer???

I was wondering if everybody was told to breathe into a spirometer for 5 days after the surgery.... I'm wondering if this is done after any surgery or specifically after LAP-BAND®....

Re: Spirometer???

Yup. It's used to reduce the risk of pneumonia if I remember correctly.

Re: Spirometer???

I had to do it 5 x/day 1 week prior and 1 week post surgery. Post surgery is the reduce risk is pneumonia. With gas pain, or just surgery pain, and sleeping a lot, people tend to breathe shallow. This allows stuff to 'accumulate' at the bottom of our lungs. This leads to infections and pneumonia. Deep breaths keep our lungs 'clean.'

Re: Spirometer???

I had to use it pre and post surgery. Post surgery I was told to take 10 breaths using it every 4 hours after surgery to decrease risk for pneumonia...

Re: Spirometer???

This is used after most surgeries, not specifically LAP-BAND®.

Re: Spirometer???

I didn't have to use one and I'm actually completely suprised at that. I have a lung disease with an increased risk of pneumonia/collapsed lung so I would of been in the high percentage that was meant to use one after but didn't. I guess it just depends on doctors and previous health straight before surgery maybe?
