I use Muscle Milk Cookies & Cream. 32g protein, 300 calories, no sugar, lactose free, I mix it with 10oz of water. I drink this for breakfast and it hits the spot.

Blech! I haven't had a protein shake since I was allowed to eat mushy/pureed foods. I much prefer to get my protein through food. If I get really desperate for protein, I'll drink skim milk (without adding protein powder) to get in my protein. With real foods, I feel full faster and it lasts longer. Plus, in my humble opinion, real food tastes a gazillion times better than protein drinks.
That being said, I can tell you that you should look for a drink with at least 15g of protein and less than 5g of sugar. I've heard that you can't absorb more than 30g of protein at a time, but I have no idea how true that is. Many protein drinks can be mixed with water, milk, or juice. Using 8oz of skim milk (roughly 1 cup) adds 8g of protein and 12g of carbs. Using juice adds a bunch of carbs, but no protein.
As far as how much to drink...it kind of depends on your protein powder itself. You have to factor in your protein drinks when calculating your total calories. So it pays to drink a low calorie protein drink. I'd think 300-400 calories would be appropriate for a meal replacement. About half that would make a decent snack. |

I just had my surgery tuesday and starting today I made 8 oz. protein shake and I couldn't even get one down. - probably had 4 oz. I'm suppose to have 5 shakes a day. I'm like there is no way right now. Maybe later on it will get easier? All I'm doing all day is sipping on vitamin water and I did have a can of low sodium beef broth. The shakes I drink are optifast.... I would make them with less water but.I think the thickness of it is what bothers me. I'm on liquids for two/three weeks depending on my progress. Ill find out more on jan 9th. I hope it gets easier because right now I'm starting to wonder. Lol |

As for protein shakes I have tried several! I actually like the EAS chocolate powder mixed with skim milk. It is very fine and dissolves completely. It has 23g protein in the mix and the added 8 from the milk is a generous 31g. It has 130 cal and 2.5g fat. I highly recommend it! Kimberly

I started back to drinking a ProSlam45 Bullets. They are slimy, taste good to me, are 3.1 oz, and have 45 grams of protein. They have 190 calories, 2 carbs and no sugar.
They help me feel full longer, because right now I need a fill! My fill is next week.
