Cool low blood sugar

Had my surgery on Thursday, April 10th. Feeling great! No pain meds. Doing my 1 oz of liquids every 15 minutes. I was just wondering if anyone else has been getting low blood sugar? My husband has a tester so I test once in awhile. I was feeling light headed awhile ago and checked my blood pressure and that was good so I grabbed the tester and my blood was 67. Any suggestions? I'm not diabetic. Thanks!

Hi Dawn, I am type 2 diabetic (one of the reasons for me deciding to have the surgery).

My blood sugar levels have more than halved over the past week - not surprising since we are consuming so few calories. Actually, they are now in normal range (yay!!).

If you are on full liquids, my advice would be to ensure you take something with carbs (a few sips of a good vegetable soup - thinned out with stock) or a few sips meal replacement shake (which has about equal amounts of carbs and protein) at least every 60 minutes to keep your blood sugar stable. Your blood sugar drops when your carbs drop. If you can handle it, some lucozade (or other "energy" drink) might help - I can't do that because I am diabetic.

Hope that helps.

Can you have protein drinks yet? That might help.

Protein drinks will only help with low blood sugar if they also contain carbohydrates... protein alone will not raise blood sugar levels. Check the labels to see the nutrient levels.

I meant to mention in my previous post that fruit juice will help.

I drink Unjury which has no carbs so juice is a good idea! I skipped the juice since I've been home so that's most likely why I'm dropping. Thanks! Back to work this morning which isn't a big deal cuz all I do is drive a schoolbus. I took no pain meds so I'm good to go!

I'm hypoglycemic and I was really worried about how my blood sugar would do. My doc allows the following when you need to raise your bs. 1 tsp Honey, 8 oz skim milk, 4 oz juice, or 1 tsp jelly.

I used Unjury mixed with Sugar Free CIB and skim milk and my sugar held solid as a rock. As a matter of fact, I'm just over 4 months post op and blood sugar problems have nearly vanished.
