The lap band mind game!

Greetings! i have been putting this off for some time and need some help. First, my story. I started pre-op dieting on 8/1, and had my surgery on 8/27. I was 311 on 8/1, 295 on 8/27, 272 for my first fill on 11/03. I have seen 262 on my home scale, but I am lingering at about 265.

So, obviously, I'm thrilled about my numbers, if you will, but again, they're just numbers. My weight loss is not consistent, but i must say that i am partially satisfied with my results.

I am realizing how much work this is! If I dont go to the gym, or exercise on my hamster wheel (treadmill) in my home, the scale doesnt move. If I make some poor food choices, the scale doesnt move.

So I guess I'm asking you all: Do you become complacent in your weight loss? I feel like I take breaks from it. I often say to myself, "i lost a lot of weight already, I can try that." Is this always a bad idea? I think what i have done is drasticallychanged the way I eat, more importantly, the portion size. I enjoy eating things that i never would consider before, because I knew I couldnt stop. I guess I can say that i just dont think I'm doing enough, and everyone is always talking about it with me, so i feel like if I'm not making constant progress, I'm failing.

Are plateaus normal?

thanks for your help.

Do you become complacent in your weight loss? I feel like I take breaks from it...i personally feel like i was on a break for a really long time...and my break is over...i don't think treating urself every now and then is a bad thing....but i don't know about taking breaks from exercising this early in the game...i'm over a year out...and still don't take breaks...i'm not saying to make urself misreable...but the time is now...move 4-ward constantly...don't go back and don't stop...

Re: The lap band mind game!

I totally agree with 2flyguys about keeping the exercise going but I myself have taken a couple of short breaks that last a couple of days. What we really need to do is make a lifestyle change and I feel that daily exercise is a very necessary component to losing this weight and keeping it off.

I find that I do still have days when I am lazy. On these days I push myself past it when I am able but if I have a headache or feel tired I do tend to procrastinate some but I do always return to daily exercise after a short break.

My weight loss is very inconsistent. I can go weeks at the same weight then suddenly realize a 5 pound loss. It is so weird how our bodies take time to adjust.

I love your term for the treadmill (hamster wheel). This is so cute. I could not do a treadmill. My attention span is much too short.

Re: The lap band mind game!

This whole experience is about changing our life. That means changing everything. I allow myself one bite when I think I deserve a treat, but it is usually something silly like a whole grain cracker. I was totally ready to make this change and I plan to keep doing it. I am so happy that the band is helping me do it. I went through a little plateau when I needed a fill, but I realized later that I let myself get off track. I didn't need to do it at all, and now I hope I can keep doing the one cup or one and a half cup portion even after the restriction lets up. You can do it I know you can, you just need to change the mind set that we all well know is what caused us to be here in the first place. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Re: The lap band mind game!

I did something similkar. I've been plat'd for many weeks. However, I had health issues which were instantly resolved, so I'm patient now for the rest of it. Normal b/p (110/60), normal blood sugar and more. I have my life back and so pleased. But, you're correct..doesn';t seem to matter if I count cals, exercise or not...still hung. My surgery was March 12, 09..by first fill I had lost 41 pnds...to date, now...48...so, here's a friend in the same boat! If you'd care to 'buddy up'...let me know and I'll share my email with ya.
