Red face I think I messed up

Hey guys I think I messed up last night I had some mash potatoes shreed chicken breast and some smash flat greens:biggrin2:. I don't think I was suppose to eat that this early. I had my op on 2/29/08 my wife seems to think I should be on puree foods right now and it should have been fine. :confused2:But I feel like I have some thing stuck in my throat and my chest was hurting a little bit. Well today I called the doctor for a follow up and they said I still should be on liquids. Can someone help what do I do? Do you think I messed up my Band? Does the feeling of having some thing stuck in your throat stay there? Thanks would love to hear what u have to say.

hi.
no idea if you 'messed up' your band. the reason for the post op diet is to have the band 'settle' into place and the internal sutures to heal, not weight loss.

my advice, just stick with liquids until your surgeon tells you to progress to mushies. start mushies very slowly and go with true mushies, mashed potatoes maybe, something really really mushy and build yourself up to more non-mushy mushies.

chicken is very difficult for a lot of bandsters.

what you are feeling sounds almost like you are 'stuck'. if its still a problem, SIP some pineapple juice, that helps some.

good luck!

I was on liquids for a week post-op, followed by four weeks of soft foods (aka mushies), such as cottage cheese, yogurt, applesauce, even baby foods!!

At five weeks, I started on solid foods very slowly. My Bariatric Center gave me a booklet that had step-by-step instructions which I followed to the letter.

I just hope your band hasn't slipped...

Didn't your Dr's office or the nutritionist give you post op diet requirements either before surgery or when you left the hospital?

Most do. You need to follow the directions. You have a few small incisions on the outside but inside you had surgery and you need to heal.

Get back on track so you don;t do any damage.

Hey thanks for responding I didn't get anything from this doctor. I was suppose to use another doctor but they filed under a differt one true results did. To keep my date I had to go with Dr. snow the ladys there at the surgery were kinda of mean they threw stuff in my bag. It wasn't want I needed. So I have been here reading and looking and winging it. I thought I should be on smushies now. I feel better now. I hope I didn't get it to slip how can you tell. Will the doctor know? I will stay on liquids that is for sure I can have soup right. I had tryed to get a hold of my doctor but couldn't be reached. I finally did today and I go see him on wesenday. I want to say Thank you to everyone.

There are symptoms for a slip, but you would need to see your surgeon to know for sure. This is the importance of following the post-op diet. How do you not know what food stage you're in? You got no documentation, instructions, etc. from your surgeon? If I were you, I would question them on this. Actually if I were you, I wouldn't have left unless I had some information in hand. It's unacceptable. Be your advocate and don't accept "couldn't be reached." There should always be someone answering the phone and a route to voicemail or leave a message.

For your reference, and your wife's, shredded chicken is not pureed, nor are mashed potatoes (they can be, but not the way I think of them), nor are "smash flat greens," whatever that is. Pureed foods are foods that have been pureed - aka ground until there are no solids. Think BABY FOOD, not SHREDDED CHICKEN. Shredded chicken is a solid and shouldn't be attempted until you reach that stage.

I think your band is probably just fine---they are a lot tougher than we think they are! It sounds like you have some food that is stuck...sips of warm water will help the food pass.

I had my first band for 5 years, and it did eventually slip--but it took A LOT for it to slip!! I had food poisoning that landed me in the hospital for 5 days...it was the severe vomiting and retching that made my band slip (A LOT of torture!).

I don't think ONE eating episode will make your band slip. But I'd definitely go easy these next few days on the food.

Also--go to the Food posts. Someone there posted AN AMAZING week-by-week diet for newly banded people. She explains what foods to buy/eat for clear liquids, liquids, soft, and mushie stages. Even tho I've had a band for quite awhile, this list was a HUGE help when I got re-banded a couple of weeks ago!

All the best!!
