Hi, I've recently heard of some comments about some of the bariatric surgeries actually cause Type 2 diabetes to go into a remission like state, long before you improve you insuline resistance throught weightloss.
Does anyone know more about this? Personally, I've never wanted to consider anything other that the Lap Band, but is it possible that one of the other procedures might be better for treating my diabetes?
thanks
Tyler

Hi there
Gastric Bypass surgery does send diabetes immediately into remission in many cases. It has to do with how food is absorbed in the intestines. However, My type II diabetes went into remission with the Lap Band. I think it was a combination of the fact that food is released more slowly to the intestines and allows insulin to do its job because food stays above the band and is digested slower. I also had an omentectomy when I had my Lap Band and I have not been on medication since. My last HBa1c was 5.6. My endocronologist said I am in remission. I personally chose Lap Band over gastric bypass because I had heard that there are nutritional deficiencies with bypass and in many cases, weight regain can occur over time.

Tyler, Google 60 minutes and go to the one that says videos, reports, profiles, interviews. Then go to the April 20th episode- the Bypass Effect on Diabetes, Cancer. There is an excellent discussion and two videos. They explain it wonderfully and offer great examples. This episode would certainly have made me go in that direction had I seen this before my banding.
Also, remember that no matter which surgery is chosen, the weight can return if the dietary and exercise guidelines are not followed. If you have done the research, then you know.
BUT... Be sure to discuss this with your Dr. They would be sure to direct you better than any of us would be able to.
Good luck with your choice.
