Taking Metformin

For those of you who take Metformin (or any medication, for that matter) with your meals, when do you take it? Since we're not supposed to drink with our meals, do you take your medication before you begin eating?

I always took my meds before my meals with a little water. Honestly, I usually allowed myself as much water as I wanted prior to beginning my meal... rather than following the no drinking before/after rule. No drinking after made sense to me... but not before.

If you're not as liberal as me, then I'd take it prior to your meals with as little water as possible (like a dixie cup full). :)

I don't think it's so much that you take it at the SAME time as your meals, just that you have some food in your stomach when the med starts breaking down. So you have a little time before you need to get food in your stomach. That said, I have been taking metformin a long time, and as long as I haven't missed several pills in a row I just take it right when I get up and then have breakfast within an hour or so. No problems.

Thanks Fabfatgrl. I don't worry about water intake before a meal either. My surgeon's instructions were liquids up until the time you eat, then nothing for 45-60 mins after the meal. Before banding I used to eat, then take my medications, and I haven't yet gotten used to doing it opposite. I guess I'll just have to get into the habit. Hopefully pretty soon I won't need metformin anyways.

Not about meds, but about drinking before meals. The dietician at my surgeon's office calls it water loading. She said to drink 4-8 ozs of water immediately before a meal, then nothing 60 min. after. I guess the idea is the water will make you feel fuller and you will eat less during the meal. She even mentioned going to a restaurant and sipping on water while waiting for your entree. I'm only 3 weeks out and still on mushies and have not eaten out yet, so I'm no expert. I have a follow-up appt next week and will meet with her and move to phase 3...REAL FOOD!!!

So...I would think takings meds right before a meal would be appropriate.

I'm still taking metformin....I chew mine up and brush out the parts that stick to my teeth....it's a bit bitter but I've grown used to it....

usually about an hour before I eat....like a little 'pre dinning mint'....HAR!!!

Pre banding I always took metformin on an empty stomoch, right before bed. I also take aspirin and lipitor. I kept forgetting to take my meds, so I asked my GP if I could take them all at once right before bed. He said SURE. I havent taken any meds since being banded last week. My numbers have been around 5.2-6.2

I take glouphage(ex spelling) which I think is nearly close to yours. My primary care gave me liquid to take. Check with him.
