Don't hate me - but I wish this wasn't SO easy!

So I am almost 3 weeks post op. The whole process was really easy. The doctor said I am actually very small inside (huh?) so I had no swelling, almost no pain, no gas, and have no problem getting anything down. It's almost like I didn't have anything done.

I'm on the mushy stage right now, and should start eating real food next week. I'm not having too much hunger either.

My problem is that I've started to be able to eat more than I should. The doctor said I would KNOW if I had eaten too much, but I'm not so sure as I haven't had any signs. So I guess now I'm back to willpower? Which obviously I don't have or I wouldn't be obese.

Tonight I went out to dinner for a family b-day, and I really CAN eat more than I should. I didn't eat anything that was against my rules, but it scares me that I can eat so much.

I know this will change once I start to get fills, but now I am scared. How did you all deal with this stage of the process? HELP!!

Just make sure the most tempting stuff doesn't make it home from the grocery store. If you are cooking for others, tell them they don't get the treats for a while, because you can't stay away! As you said, things will change when you get a fill or two, but right now, unfortunately, it is a matter of willpower. I think it's easier than trying to diet without a band, because you know it is just for a short period of time. You can do it!

This is a difficult time, but right now you have to remember that this is the time for healing, not weight loss. Many people do not lose any weight during this period, and many even gain. The band is meant to work once you start getting fills. Until then, you have to be patient and not allow yourself to get discouraged.

Your body is still healing so mostly try to follow doctors instructions as far as what you are eating is concerned. (are you allowed to eat everything after 3 weeks or are you still on soft foods?) As far as amount goes, I had the same experience - I could basically eat the same amount as before banding and this is pretty normal. This is because your band is not working yet - once the swelling goes down from surgery it is like you don't even have a band - this is why we go in for fills. You can't get a fill for a week or more so there is really nothing you can do about being able to eat larger quantities. Believe me, once you get the proper restriction you won't be able to eat large quantities. I found that it was easier to do my best in my food choices and not get to caught up with trying to lose big numbers because, like you said, if I could lose weight without restriction I wouldn't have had the surgery! I didn't lose much weight until my 4th fill, which was when I first felt restriction. So don't get discouraged if you can eat pretty large amounts even with a fill. With each fill my portion sizes got smaller and smaller and it was a little frustrating to be losing weight so slowly but I think in the long run it is the healthier, best way to go.

Me Too

I just wanted to say you asked my question for me!! I'm only 10 days postop...and at least feel like I can eat anything! Beginning to worry. Thanks to all those who answered you because their answers were for me too! Now I'll not worry, try to eat as little as possible and eagerly await my first fill.

You just described where I am!!!

About 2 weeks post op and I can eat anything in any quantity. Like you, surgery was a piece of cake (so to speak). No pain, no gas, no nothing! But I also don't feel like I'm banded or have had anything done. I am eating my usual portions and trying to make good choices. Not always done though. I, too, need a fill....quick!
