I am so big and uncomfortable that I cannot fathom wanting or being able to exercise. I have the excuse of a toddler at home, but I know I will have to exercise to make this work.
Who hated it before and now likes it? Did you start right away or wait until you lost a few pounds. My feet kill me at 280, so I am thinkin 30 pounds off maybe start, but that may take longer if I DONT exercise!!! Help.

Help. | Noahsmom, Everyone is different but as for me, I am 3 weeks post op and just this weekend got my rear moving. I did some yardwork friday for about an hour, saturday went bowling with a group for 2 hrs and another bit of yardwork yesterday. I have a very dusty not used much elliptical but will be starting that as soon as my energy level increases a bit more. Tonite I am going to do some water exercises at the Y. Just start small when you get some energy. It does take a bit post op to get back to speed so don't try and do too much too soon. If you have a toddler at home, believe me, you are exercising! lol

I'll be honest, I hated it before and I still hate it. But, it has become a necessity for me. I feel so much better after I have walked or worked out. When I miss walking or working out I feel like I've lost/missed something. It is starting to become routine - which is something I can say I never thought I'd say.
As for advice. Just start moving. If you're doing laundry - stand while you do it. You burn more calories standing than sitting. Park the car a little further when you go to the the store shopping. Go by a workout tape of something you think you'll enjoy. You don't have to finish it - just work a little bit each day. Set yourself mini goals. Before you know it your knees and joints will start feeling better. Each day will become a little easier.

Noahsmom. I never used to exercise now I do it almost everyday... The motivation came to me the minute I started losing. Since I knew each pound that fell off wasn't coming back it made me wanna work that much harder to get it off quicker :)
Really though it doesn't take alot to shock the body into throwing out calories if you're not an exercise person now. I would just start with walking around the block just a couple times a day. The more you move the more you will want to move once u start losing weight.

Personally, I never liked exercise before. I first lost about 40 lbs without the exercise, then just decided to make it happen. I still sometimes don't like it, but more often I really feel bothered if I -cannot- work my daily exercise routine in.
Just say "I -will- do this for 4 weeks" and see what happens. It doesn't take that long to build a habit.

Yes, I understand how you feel. About 6 weeks post-op, I joined a senior chair aerobics group and those seniors really work it. I am into my 4 week with them 3x a week and loving it. Just start slow and after a while it will become a habit.

I've never really cared for exercise either. I did it when I was in my early 20s and pregnant etc. Since then it's been NOTHING. I have arthritis in my knees, hips, spine, and shoulders, so if anyone has an excuse it's me, but I exercise faithfully 3X a week. Immediately after surgery I started walking around my neighborhood. I had a new dog who loved it, so I ended up enjoying it. As soon as I was cleared to swim, I started water aerobics 3x a week. It doesn't hurt me at all. The water takes the pressure off my joints and it didn't matter if I was big. I felt marvelous afterwards. I have more energy than I have in years. I'm building up a lot of muscle and flexibility too. I HIGHLY recommend it. It's done wonders for me. Not only am I losing weight, but I'm more flexible, I sleep better, I'm making friends, my disposition has improved and I actually have muscles. We do it to music, and the girl usually plays oldies. I'm 49, so that's fun for me too!!! bopping around to my old 70s tunes revs me right up.

Hi Noahsmom! Hang in there. Exercising is not at the top list of my favorites but I know that I have to do it every single day to be healthy. Start out slow. This may seem silly but for me, it was mind over matter. I started out walking the dog. I was really "exercising," I was walking the dog :-) Before you know it, it will be a routine that you don't want to break.

I didnt really hate it before and I was so lucky to be banded at a BMI of 35 so it wasnt as totally beyond me as it was for others. But it was MUCH harder and I was in a lot of pain from my feet and ankles and couldnt walk for exercise.
I had to start with what I could do which was the elliptical at the gym. After about 3 months, I decided that the time commitment of driving somewhere to do my exercise wasnt going to work long term for me so I had to try walking and to my surprise, I actually RAN - 3kms. After that I just stuck at it. The weight I'd lost to that point made it much easier on my body and then as my bad ankle strengthened, my problems abated a lot.
As I bounded round a 10km course in a race on Sunday I was reflecting on that. I stuck at it, I've been really slow to improve, I mean people start running and run half marathons six months later, but I've gotten there over 2 years or so. Start with what you can do, just make it doable and not ridiculously time consuming (that's why I chose running, you can get a good workout in half an hour if that's all you have) and stick with it. Have some rest days, make it OK for your body in the state its in now and really, just do it.
Good luck!

Start by walking. Walk around the block. Walk as much as you can. Wear a pedometer so you can see just how much you do walk. After you've been walking for a while you start to realize that maybe you can do those activities you didn't think you could do. Down the line you might be in a serious aerobics class or you're running and then you look back and say it was because of the walking. Of course it looks monumental to "work out" when you feel too uncomfortable to move. Its all about the baby steps. That's what happend to me - I started off walking and am now working out at 5 days a week, 1 1/2 hours a day. You can do it, too. Good luck and keep walking!

I think you need to just start off really slow. Walk for just 2 minutes a day. Then add a minute or two every week. Like anything it has to become a life style. Back in the day, I had to force and drag myself to work out. Then, after a few weeks, it seemed much easier. After a month or so, I hated missing my gym nights, and loved exercising. Also, you'll have so much more energy to keep up with the toddler.

I have never been a big fan of exercise and my knees and feet would kill me whenever I tried. You will notice that as the weight comes off that it gets easier and easier to do it. I would suggest joining Curves when you get clearance from your doc. It is a decent amount of exercise for a beginner and it is over in 30 minutes. If you go a few times a week then you will see and feel results. Hang in there, it isn't so bad and definitely necessary!

I hate exercise and I never do it. What I do is have at least once "active" hobby that gets me out and moving. It's not "exercise" but I get exercise doing it. I pick something I love to do, not whatever gets me the best workout.
This way I can stick with it for much longer than I've ever gone to a gym. I did figure skating for 10 years for example. The most I've gone to a gym regularly is 10 month!

Appeal! Search for it on this forum. There is some great insurance information on the insurance thread.
Good luck!
