I like to donate blood. I realize that I won't be able to do this for a while after the surgery, but I am hoping that I will be able to resume donating blood a year or two out, does anyone know anything about this?

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but I have donated blood since being banded, with no problem.

I didn't realise there were any limitations on donating blood after Lap Band surgery.

Unless you go under 110 pounds there is no reason why you couldn't donate blood. Please do!

I think there's a period of a few months after any type of surgery that you can't donate blood. I was blood donor before being banded and after the surgery I've already donated a few times, no problem at all.

I like to donate blood, but since surgery my red cell count has been low (just the teeny tiniest bit below "normal"). I need to take iron, but I'm horrible at daily supplements.

this is good to know. I'm two months post op and a friend of mine has cancer and needs regular transfusions. Her insurance doesn't pay for blood products. I've given in her name just so it won't be so expensive for her. I haven't since banding and was a little concerned. I guess I will resume helping her out.

Thanks for your answers, the blood donation people did not think I would be able to donate again after the surgery. They were not sure, they were just worried about someone getting enough liquids in.

Unless your band is too tight you should not have any trouble with liquids. You just have to drink them more slowly.

I am on call for Blood donation and donated just 2 days ago, one month after surgery. I was told that the incisions had to be healed with no oozing.

Hmmmm.....I thought you had to wait a year after surgery to donate? Wow. I waited a year, but have donated both blood and platelets since.
Guess you gotta ask the Blood Services in your area.
