Type 2s off of insulin/medication?

I am a Type 2 Diabetic and take insulin and two oral meds. I'm scheduled for Lap Band surgery on Apr. 11, and my surgeon says I should be able to get off of the insulin fairly quickly and also off of at least 1 of the oral meds.

If you are Diabetic and have a Lap Band, were you able to decrease/eliminate your medication, and if so, how long did it take? Thanks.

Hi LisaB411,
I am (was) type II and since having the surgery, I am off all of my medications. I was taking byetta and metformin, I have been free of all Meds since July of 2007. I just had my hba1c done and it was 5.7! My endocrinologist says I am in remission. I also had an omentectomy with the Lap Band which I think helped. Good Luck!

Congratulations on your decision! I'm sure you're excited. I had my surgery March 18. I was on 60 units of Lantus 2 x daily, that has been cut down to 30 units 2 x daily. I'm on Humalog (fast acting). I'm not taking as much there. But I am having a problem this week, my numbers are in the 200s and not down where they should be. I have a feeling it has to do with that time of month.

Again, CONGRATULATIONS!

HI! I was banded on March 18; so I am 23 days out. I am on 2 different types of insulin, 1 short acting Humalog, and 1 long acting Lantus. Lantus is being taken 2x a day. My Lantus has gone from 90 units 2x a day to 30 units 2 x a day. My fast acting has been cut in half. Good luck on the 11th! Let us know how things come out!!!!!!!!!

I am still in the application stage. My concern is how the liquid diet or not eating post opaffects your (our) diabetes. I am concerned with going to low and crashing.

I had Lap Band surgery, I don't know which one you are getting. But I hope this helps a little! Make sure you monitor your blood sugars at all times. (My insurance pays for my strips -- I'm lucky in that respect.) Because I'm on an insulin that depends on how many carbs you eat, I have to take my blood sugar all the time (or at least 3x a day). I don't know if you are on oral medications or insulin or maybe even both. When I was drinking the shakes 2 weeks before surgery, (because I'm a diabetic) I was given a sample meal plan. I would have 5 shakes, sugarfree puddings, sugarfree jello, sf popsicles, fruit in light syrup or their own juices. I did not have problems with lows. But the office also told me to contact my diabetic doctor and let them know what I was doing; that way if they wanted to adjust my medicines they could.

Hi my name is Sharon, I had my surgery on March 17, 2008. I am monitoring my blood sugars quite often since my Lap Band. I have been put on a sliding scale of Novolog, and 25 units of Lantus. I do believe I will be off my insulin soon. I am also on Metformin and 2 different b/p meds, Cholesterol meds. So I am fairly new with the insulin going down. Blood Sugars have been running great since I have had the surgery. Before my surgery I was running in 400/500. Just an accident waiting to happen. So glad I feel better.

I have to tell you guys that I am very jealous. I have been type II for 25 years, on insulin originally, lost weight, then oral meds until I wanted to get pregnant (can't take orals during pregnancy). That was 12 years ago and stayed on insulin ever since. I take 48 units of long acting 1X day and novorapid for each meal with carbs.

I was banded May 07 and lost 40 lbs originally with almost no change in my meds. Then I fell off the wagon hard. One contributing factor was my high expectations of going off insulin and High BP meds. When I did not happen I felt like a failure.

But I am back and taking it day by day. Perhaps one day I can reduce but if it is not in the cards, then it is not in the card. C'est la vie.

I am very happy for all of you!

Susan

Hello. I had lap band on Tuesday (4/22). While in the hospital overnight I was on small units of insulins. My blood sugars were out of control before ranging between 400-200. I take 50 units of Levemir 2xday, 30 units of Symilin 2x day, and 20 units of Novolog 3x day, along with 1000 mg Metformin 2x day. Today, I contacted my Diabetes nurse and asked for guidance since my sugars are dropping with the liquid diet.

I am hoping to eliminate all meds asap!! :-)

LisaB411,
By now you are banded! Congratulations, I hope everything is going fine for you.
I am a Type II Diabetic and was banded 11/14/07. Before banding I was taking 60cc's of Lantus every night. I'm now down to 30 and will continue to reduce the amount as my weight reduces.
I've lost 71 pounds, and have another 80 to go, so it might be a while before I'm "insulin free" but that time is in my future.
You take care!

I got my band about 2 weeks ago, and have been able to cut my insulin intake to about a quarter of what it previously was. I stopped taking my Glucophage XR, simply because the pills are too big for me to get down. I think if I could take the Glucophage, I could probably get off of the insulin all together fairly quickly.

I am scheduled for banding on Tuesday (4/29/08) and have been able to go off both my metformin and my blood pressure medications just from the weight I have lost on the five week long pre-surgery diet. I'm amazed. I've lost 21 pounds since March 18. I went off the metformin and the bp drugs about a week ago and my blood pressure was 122/74 yesterday and my glucose levels have been averaging about 95 to 110. I had about 200 average on my glucose levels on 1000 mg of metformin prior to starting the pre-surgery diet. Never been on insulin. I feel really good. Hungry - but good!!
