There was another story in the Boston Globe Heath pages today regarding Bypass and lap band as a "cure" for Type II diabetes. Second article in last month. They talked to doctors from Brigham and Womens in Boston and the Joslin Diabetes clinic. They feel this is the most promising thing now and thousands of people are eligible for it. Just got of the phone with hubbys HR they forced him into retirement last Friday, we will be covered but have to pay Cobra, which right now for BCBS is cheaper than us buying a policy and it goes for 18 months.
So I don't have to worry about my hopefully upcoming surgery. Have my meeting in March for all day session and sleep clinic also.

Wish everyone lots of luck.

From day one my sugar reading came down. I was on 5 metformen, actose, 70 U Lantus and sliding scale Regular insulin. Now I take 35U of Lantus and thats it. In only 6 or 7 weeks I am off all my other diabetic medications, Off Lipitor thank god, because that one terrible, off prilosec too.
It also cured my acid reflux......gone the day of surgery. That alone was worth the price of self-pay. I only check my sugar once in a while and My A1c came down from 13.9 (highest) to 6.2 (current)...I hope this stays this way. I feel so much better just taking off 25 pounds and eating better. I still don't exercise as much as I would like, but I am working on that.

Just an update: had my annual physical last week, and I just received my test results.

Blood Pressure: 100/70
Resting Pulse Rate: 52
Fasting Blood Glucose: 89 << First time it's been below 110 in years...
Total Cholesterol: 178
>>LDL: 121
>>HDL: 57

My urinalysis shows that I'm in ketosis (burning body fat for energy). My BUN is very low (shows extreme calorie restriction). There was a handwritten note on the test: EAT MORE! First time a doctor's EVER said that to me...

Hi Everyone

I am an insulin dependant. I was taking around 170 to 180 units a day on the pump and my numbers were still going to high. Now I am on Humilin R which is very rare. It very concentrated. My numbers are better but still not quite low enough. I am thinking of having the lap band surgery in April and was wondering if anyone had any success stores to share with me regarding insulin usage?
