Once you start to lose weight chances are your diabetes will go away. I take 5 pills a day without a problem. I can take a standard pill size without having to split it. You may have to check with your pharmacist to see if you can split your pills. Good luck with your surgery. Julie

I am on Metformin (large pill - which I crush) and Starlix (which I haven't taken) and Avandia (small pill - which I swallow). The first 2 weeks I was on liquids and soft foods and my sugar was the best it had ever been without meds 86-120. But this week I am on mushies and I'm eating fish, and eggs and I noticed my sugars went up. I believe it's because my body is adjusting to the changes. My sugar went up for the past 2 days to the 180's so I decided to take my meds just to be on the safe side. My doctor told me if my sugars were too low with the meds to discontinue them, so that's what I'm doing. Just check with yr pharmacist to make sure they can be crushed and maybe they might come in a liquid form. Don't worry soon enough we'll be off our meds!!! Good Luck on yr surgery, you will be fine!!!:clap2:

I had to crush mine for a couple of weeks (I was taking 11/day at surgery). After the swelling went down I gradually added back the smaller ones whole, the others I split, and had no problem. I was told that anything smaller than an M&M is usually okay.
Word of encouragement....at surgery I was on 3 diabetes meds, 3 blood pressure pills, plus others. After only a few months I was completely off oall diabetes and b.p. meds and my levels are holding perfect. How's that for wonderful?!! I save enough on my meds to more than pay for the protein supplements I use.

I was on insulin injections for 15 years, up to 200 units a day PLUS orals....
that was PRE-op... no injections at all for nearly a year now!!!!
I just chew up that metformin....it makes everything else I eat taste so much better!! HAR
