Do any diabetics here use protein powder in their shakes, or do you only stick to small amounts of meat? My bloodwork already indicates my kidneys have been affected by years of type 2 diabetes. Maybe I should just try to stay away from it.....
Oh yeah, I haven't been banded yet (May 13th date....) but I'm trying to change my eating habits now for a smoother transition. |
1st things 1st......GOOD FOR YOU!

Keep up the good work.
I'm a long term (about 20 years) type II. I'm currently on insulin and metformin. I have been using the protein powder shakes as a supplement to my diet, I'm not banded yet. Waiting on approval of insurance after doing all the jumping through hoops.
Yes, too much protein can damage your kidneys, so be sure to have yourself monitored while you use it. Getting enough protein is important during the time immediately before and after surgery. Protein is what your body uses to build more of you, ie - healing. If you are on a balanced diet and getting adequate protein and other nutrients you probably don't need to take additional protein except as I noted in the immediate pre and post-operative periods. Ask your Lap Band surgeon, nutritionist, and primary care Dr for recommendations.
