Diabetes

I am getting ready for my sugery on November 2nd in Kansas City Missouri. I had to call the hospital for a pre-equal. The nurse was not sure they could do my surgery because my blood sugars have been up. My last A1C (average) was 9.4, which is around 250. That was about 4 weeks ago, so it might be down now and I have to have it retested tomorrow. She said it has to be below 150. Now...I do have a little bit of beef with them because if I had to have my gallbladder removed or something else...they would just do it. I also have to have a EKG now. The doctor didn't order this or say anything about the blood sugars being a problem.

Did your doctor or the hospital tell you this?

Current weight: 252
Height: 5'10"
BMI: 36

It was never mentioned to me about the A1C's had to be within a certain range, however, I had to have an EKG & Stress Echocardiagram as part of the pre surgery testing. Good Luck!

One of the complications of HIGH A1c is reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of the red blood cell....that MAY be one factor they are concerned about...

Increased healing times, reduced oxygenation of the brain and other tissues, etc....what my own surgeon said was 'It's a good thing you are a well-controlled diabetic so I don't have anything to worry about'....

I'm sure there's way more to it than just this issue....

Test

Today I got my blood drawn and had my EKG. The EKG results were good. I'll know tomorrow about the A1C. I'm just crossing my fingers at this point.
