I am about 5 months into the "physician supervised weight loss attempt" and I have GAINED weight each month. Will my nsurance see this and say, "oh please, she can't be serious"? I know I am a good band candidate, but my compliance with the supervised diet is joke. Am I screwed?

I could be wrong about this, but it may actually be in your favor. I think the insurance company requires that diet as a 'last ditch effort' on your part to lose weight without surgery.
If I'm wrong, and they are looking for compliance... then I really don't know what to tell you..

What do they expect to see? If you could diet and lose weight successfully you would have done so by now. That 6 month supervised diet thing has to be the stupidest idea I've ever heard, thank goodness they dont do it here.
Most people would not even be at their surgeon's office unless they'd tried every conceivable way to lose weight known to modern man.
Maybe in a miniscule percentage of borderline patients, they actually lose weight and either decide they can keep going or more likely lose enough to then be easily disqualified by the insurance company on the basis that they're not fat enough. If it were me in that position, I'd make absolute sure I lost nothing.
Just stick at it, and I'm sure it wont go against you. It probably almost never works.

That is Stupid! If any of us could lose the weight without the band, we would have. I just don't understand. My heart goes out to you.

I agree.. It is stupid. What is the percentage of people actually losing weight and keeping it off on any supervised diet? It it worked so well, we all won't need the band...
The point is, the band is a tool to help you. I think you are a good candidate.

one thing of concern. i agree with everyones comments above but i'm also concerned about GAINING the weight. the insurance company may view that as you are not trying at all. if you try and at least stay relatively the same that's one thing but gaining may not look good. the band will do a great deal for you afterwards to lose the weight but there is still a lot of work on your part to do.

Since posting this I have had the WORST case of, well, to put it delicately, I've been rafting down The Might Mississippi. Anyway, I've lost about 6lbs, so maybe I can manage to keep this off for a couple more months or just maintain at the least.

great. i hope i didn't come across rude. was just trying to think what the insurance company might think. it is soooo tough to lose the weight. that's why we're getting the help, huh? it's such a delima because if you lose the weight then they may say let's just see if he/she keeps it off. then you're still in the waiting game. if you gain weight they may say you're not trying. catch 22. hang in there.

Hi,
I had to do the 6 mo. consultations with my Primary care physician also......and guess what..........I had a difficult time trying to stay on a diet because all I could think is that i have been there done this and I am now looking for the big gun..........so, no, I did not lose weight I gained.....and I was afraid they were not going to approve me ........but shortly after everything was sent to them I was approved and had my surgery on March 23rd.............. I tried to just maintain my weight but did gain some during the 6 mo.... i think part of it was due to stress not knowing if I was actually going to get approved.......Hang in there and the 6 mo. will go by fast.......they did for me!!!! Good Luck!

I think not doing well on the supervised diet is the point of it all. No worries. Everything will be okay.

I am in the same boat. It is the most stupid thing I have ever done. You are supposed to fail. I am in the catch 22 mode, I really can't lost anymore or I will be under the BMI limit and I really don't want to gain anymore because I'll just have to lose it again... this is a requirement that is really a detourent for for the insurance companies. One more hoop for us to jumb through, hopeing that we will just give up... Girl, keep jumping!!!!!!:)
July 13 is the last day for my "6 months". It goes by pretty fast, and I have been fat my whole life, so what's another few months.

Hi!
I just wanted to let you know that I GAINED weight on my sex month diet- I gained 6 pounds, but I am sure it is due to coming off of depo provera for the first time in 3 years. The insurance company will take loads of things into consideration, so as long as you didn't gain 20 or 30 pounds, you should be ok, just remember that you need to lose 10-15 pounds before surgery to allow the doc to get past your liver! :)
hope everything works out!
