Well, I have a tentative diagnosis. The interist thinks it is very likely that I have cushing's syndrome. So, I go for a new round of tests Friday to find out what kind I have, so i can start a treatment plan.
I'm in a weird place. This sort of makes it real, but yet not real. I don't want to go to work, but well, I have to. I just want to go to bed and sleep, which is what I usually do when depressed. I thought I'd be happy with an answer, but I have a head ache. My DH reminds me that it is only a tentative dignosis, even if it makes sense.
Cushing's Syndrom http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health/endo...s/cushings.htm
Cushing's syndrome is a hormonal disorder caused by prolonged exposure of the body's tissues to high levels of the hormone cortisol. Sometimes called "hypercortisolism," it is relatively rare and most commonly affects adults aged 20 to 50. An estimated 10 to 15 of every million people are affected each year.
... Treatment depends on the specific reason for cortisol excess and may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or the use of cortisol-inhibiting drugs. If the cause is long-term use of glucocorticoid hormones to treat another disorder, the doctor will gradually reduce the dosage to the lowest dose adequate for control of that disorder. Once control is established, the daily dose of glucocorticoid hormones may be doubled and given on alternate days to lessen side effects. |

I'm not sure if I should say GOOD! It's about time they figured out the problem, or I'M SORRY. For me, I'd be somewhat relieved that it was something that can be treated fairly successfully. Cortisol is related to insulin-resistance...so it makes a weird kind of sense. (((hug))) YOu'll get all the details, and hopefully this will open a door for you. I wish you the best, whatever the case, and whether you're asleep or not. Cindy

Vines, it sounds as if the diagnosis isn't final. According to the NIH page you cited, specific tests (including the painless urinanalysis) are needed to determine if you have Cushing's. The page also indicated that the microsurgery used to treat the most common form of Cushing's has an 80% success rate -- not perfect, but pretty damn good.
I'm embarrassed to admit that the only creature I know with Cushing's is a happy and healthy old Weimaraner who just takes daily pills.
Hang in there. We're rooting for you. If the tests are on Friday, when will you get results and the specialist's diagnosis?

Just the thread I have been waiting to see. Hang in there, Vines. It takes a minute to wrap your brain and emotions around it. Take a big long nap, then a big long walk, then a big long shower. (here's where I'm tempted to insert something trashy, yet funny...along the lines of "big and long" so lets pretend I did and see you grin ;) )
I'm no medical expert, but the cortisol connection makes sense to me in regards to weight loss. You are on the road, now! And we are here with you. ((((hugs)))) and keep us posted.

How interesting! I remember the rollercoaster of emotions I felt when diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Now it all seems like a distant memory and I'm healthy, which is all that matters.
You will be too, and it's great to have a target! Now you know what to work on and will learn how to best address it. Keep us posted, kay?

Vines -
At least they are actively looking for the cause, and not telling you you're full of "it"...
Hopefully if it is Cushings, yours will respond perfectly to treatment and you will be on your way! Woo wooot!

Is this fatal in humans? Like cancer? Do they have a cure for it for humans? I ask, in humans, because there is no cure for animals. My beloved Jeter had Cushing's K9 Disease. Will you go through the same fatigue and muscle loss?
For the K9:
He had a lot of thirst, muscle loss, easy bruising or tearing of the skin, fatigue/tired, a lot of urine (strong and long pee's), hair loss, dry skin and irregular breathing. Does the human experience the same type of symptoms?

Tentative? When will you know for sure, and what will your treatment be? Big sigh, but at least you're finally getting some answers. Thinking of you here, xoxoxoxoxoXO. |
